Detroit Electric, the US based manufacturer has announced to develop its new SP:01 two-seat electric sports car in the UK. To be manufactured at the company’s new manufacturing unit in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, the SP:01 is stated to be the world’s fastest production electric car.
According to Detroit Electric, the SP:01 will cross 0-100kmph in mere 3.7 seconds and hits a top speed of 249.4kmph. The vehicle will go on sale in European and Asian countries later this year and soon followed by the US introduction. The initial reveal of the SP:01 in the first quarter of last year has helped Detroit Electric to secure additional investment. The final styling of the electric car will be revealed in the coming weeks.
The Detroit SP:01 will lead a diverse family of all-electric production cars, including an electric 2+2 supercar and a sedan model than will be engineered, developed and assembled at a planned facility in Michigan. The lightweight, two-seat, rear-wheel-drive, open-top sportscar is packed with innovation, being the first to use smartphone applications to manage the complete in-car infotainment system. Named ‘SAMI’ (Smartphone Application Managed Infotainment system), SAMI provides access to a wide range of functions, including music player, satellite navigation, interior lighting adjust and vehicle systems status – such as the level of battery charge, range to recharge and other vehicle telemetry. It can, of course, also be used to make mobile phone calls.
