CNG Scooter Trial Run Begins in Delhi

In a bid to control rising air pollution in major Indian cities, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and Ministry of Environment have come together to launch first-of-its kind pilot programme to run two wheelers on CNG (Compressed Natural Gas). The pilot project with 50 CNG scooters has been started in Delhi, and the performance of these vehicles would be closely monitored in terms of emissions and efficiency.

The pilot programme to run CNG two wheelers was launched by Mr Dharmendra Pradhan and Mr Prakash Javadekar. Member of Parliament, Ms Meenakashi Lekhi was also present on the occasion. To start this off, a total of 50 CNG scooters are being rolled out. The first 10 scooters have been given to Dominos as delivery vehicles as part of the trial run.

Commenting on the initiative, Dharmendra Pradhan said, “the Government is pro-actively striving to promote clean fuel in the country. He said that under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the Government is promoting the use of gas in the country, thereby providing a better lifestyle to the people and also fulfilling the COP-21 commitments to curb pollution. Shri Pradhan said that the Gas share in the country’s fuel basket is just 7% compared to world average of around 24%.”

CNG scooters in Delhi

Mr Prakash Javadekar said that the Government of India is committed to curb rising pollution in the country and therefore has decided to jump from BS-IV to BS-VI emission norms by 2020. He also said that the Environment Ministry will support all the endeavours to promote clean fuel, and he showed his confidence in the project for CNG kits in two wheelers as this could bring down the pollution levels.

Who all are part of the initiative promoting CNG Scooters /Two-wheelers?

Both the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and the Ministry of Environment have come together to make this happen. It is being implemented by Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) and GAIL India Limited, while the scooters are being retrofitted with CNG kit manufactured by M/s Ituk Manufacturing India Pvt. Ltd. The first batch of ten CNG retrofitted scooters were flagged of by people present at the event.

Size & range of CNG scooters

The CNG kit comprises of two CNG cylinders of 4.8-litre water capacity each, and a total 2KG CNG (1KG in each cylinder). In a single fill, these CNG retrofitted two wheelers can run for up to 120Kms. CNG being a a cheaper fuel option than petrol, will make the per KM ride substantially economical. if idle emission test are to be trusted, the hydrocarbon emissions from CNG two wheelers are 75 percent lesser and CO emissions are around 20 percent lesser as compared to their petrol models.

Mileage of CNG Scooters

While the regular petrol-run scooters cost around Rs 1.30/Km, the CNG version of these will cost as low as 61 paise/Km.
