BMW X2 Crossover-Styled SUV Unveiled in Detroit; India debut at Auto Expo 2018

German luxury carmaker, BMW has unveiled the new BMW X2 crossover-styled SUV at the 2018 Detroit Motor Show. The vehicle was first previewed in concept avatar at the 2016 Paris Motor Show. In BMW’s global line-up, the new X2 will be the sixth SUV that will come in three trim levels – Basic, M Sport and M Sport X. The BMW X2 M Sport X combines design elements from BMW M and X family. This crossover styled SUV will make its India debut at the 2018 Delhi Auto Expo, while the launch could take place in the second half of 2018.

This premium SUV will first go on sale in global markets in March next year. Production of the SUV will take place at the carmaker’s Regensburg facility in Germany. To be positioned between X1 and X3, this new BMW SUV will compete against the Range Rover Evoque in India. BMW claims that the X2 crossover SUV will offer “undiluted driving fun” and a perfect balance between sporting dynamics and efficiency, thanks to its chassis and xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system. It also comes equipped with BMW’s ConnectedDrive services. BMW X2 India launch date

BMW’s new SUV has been designed on UKL platform that also underpins the second-generation X1, Gran Toure and 2 Series Active Tourer. Though, its 49mm shorter and 69mm lower than the X1. The SUV carries aggressive stance, and has muscular and premium appeal. Exterior highlights include BMW’s signature kidney grille, full LED headlamps with LED DRLs, LED rear lights, 17-20-inch alloy wheels, etc. Engine setup for the X2 includes three turbocharged, four-cylinder units – a 2.0L petrol, a 2.0L diesel and a 2.0L diesel. BMW X2 India Launch Date

The BMW X2 made its debut at the 2018 Detroit Motor Show, while the global launch of the coupe-SUV will happen in March 2018. The company hasn’t yet revealed the India launch details of the car, but it will make its India debut at the 2018 Delhi Auto Expo. The German carmaker is yet to reveal the exact launch details of the X2 crossover for the Indian market. It is confirmed that this model will make its public debut at the 2018 Dehi Auto Expo. The crossover-styled SUV will first go on sale in European markets before March 2018, while India launch could take place in the second half of 2018. BMW will launch this crossover-SUV with three powertrain choices including a 2.0-litre petrol and 2.0-litre diesel motor with different power outputs. The X2 sDrive20i petrol churns out a maximum power output of 190bhp, and accelerates to 100kmph from zero in just 7.7 seconds. It offers a top speed of 227kmph. On the flip side, the X2 xDrive20d diesel motor offers 190bhp of power and the range-topping 2.0-litre unit is good for 231bhp of power and 450Nm of torque. Both the diesel units get an 8-speed automatic gearbox and xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive system as standard. BMW X2 India Exterior

Describing the SUV’s design, Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design said: “The BMW X2 represents an expression of modern and extrovert vehicle dynamics”. Compared to the BMW X1, this new SUV is shorter and sits 7cm lower. Its coupe-style roofline, short overhangs and slime window graphic give it a distinct look. Upfront, the SUV features a large kidney grille with high-gloss black contrast bars, LED headlights with LED daytime running light signature, a big front bumper and silver lower trim.

The new X2 is assembled with large wheels with unique wheel rim design. The M Sport and M Sport X models come with the standard wheel sizes of 19-inch. Though, BMW is offering an option to upgrade them up to 20-inch. The standard rim size on the carline is the 17-inch. There is black cladding all around the side skirts. The C-pillar features BMW Hofmeister kink and BMW roundel.  Round the back, the car gets T-shaped LED rear lights, broad bumper, a diffuser-look cladding inlay in Dark Shadow metallic. As far as exterior paint schemes are concerned, the new BMW SUV gets non-metallic Black paint finish and nine colour options including the new Galvanic Gold metallic finish. In terms of proportions, the new X2 is 4,360mm in length, 1,824mm (2,098mm with ORVMs unfolded) in width and 1,526mm in height. The SUV comes with a wheelbase of 2,670mm, which ensures spacious cabin for both front and rear occupants. It comes with a boot space of 470-litres, which is around 11-litres lesser than Mercedes-Benz GLA. The boot space can be further extended by folding the rear seats.

Interior of the SUV has premium feel and appeal with features such as Grid cloth Anthracite upholstery (standard), trim finishers in Oxide Silver Dark with a high-gloss Black accent strip and instrument panel with contrast stitching. Similar to the conventional sunroof, the front section of its panoramic roof has tilts and slides open. BMW equips the car with its ConnectedDrive and Connected Services. The SUV also gets a 6.5-inch freestanding control display as standard feature, while an 8.8-inch touch control display with navigation system is an optional offering.

The new BMW SUV comes with a built-in WiFi hotsport with LTE speeds and optional telephony. There is a wide range of driver assistance systems including Lane Departure Warning, High Beam Assistant, Speed Limit Info with No Passing Info display, Collision Warning and Pedestrian Warning with City Braking function, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, Traffic Jam Assistant, Park Distance Control, Rear View Camera and more.
