BMW R18 Cruiser India Launch During Festive Season

BMW Motorrad is planning to expand its Indian product portfolio with the R18 cruiser motorcycle. In fact, the bikemaker has listed the model on its official Indian website. While its official launch date and details are yet to be announced, a report claims that it will hit roads in the fourth quarter of the year (possibly in October or November, 2020). Bookings of the all-new BMW R18 cruiser are likely to begin around festive season and deliveries will commence around Diwali.

For power, the new BMW cruiser uses an 1802cc, twin-cylinder, air/oil cooled boxer engine featuring two chain-driven camshafts above the drive shaft. The motor has been boosted with electronic intake pipe fuel injection system, BMS-K+ electronic engine management with overrun cut-off and twin-spark ignition – BMS-O with e-gas. Its power and torque figures stand at 90bhp at 4750rpm and 158Nm at 3000rpm respectively.

Based on the WMTC (World Motorcycle Test Cycle), the BMW R18 is claimed to consume 5.6L fuel per 100km. It has regulated three-way catalytic converter for emission control. The cruiser can attain a top speed of over 180kmph and accelerate 0 to 62mph in 4.8 seconds. Transmission duties are done by a 6-speed unit with gear shifting claw in separate transmission housing. Its suspension setup includes telescopic fork upfront and steel swinging fork with central shock unit at the rear.

The new BMW cruiser has 300mm twin disc brake and single disc brake with 4-piston fixed calipers at the front and rear axles respectively. It also comes with BMW Motorrad Integral ABS (anti-lock braking system) and switchable automatic stability control as standard features. The bike offers three riding modes – Rain, Roll and Rock. The overall length, width and height stand at 2440mm, 964mm and 1232mm respectively. The cruiser offers a seat height of 690mm.

The BMW R18 had world premiere in its concept form at the Concorso d’Eleganza last year. Design and styling of the cruiser has been inspired by the iconic 1936 R5 BMWs, especially the classic black paint with white striping, shape of the fuel tank and its general line of the frame. The swing arm tubes loop around the final drive hub and the exposed drive shaft look exactly similar to the R5.

Some of its key features include LED lighting all around, bulbous fishtail exhaust, MSR (an electronically controlled anti-slip feature), hill start assist, heated grips, a reverse gear and more. Initially, the R18 will be retailed as a limited ‘First Edition’ featuring lots of chrome bits, extra trim and metallic paint. It also gets an owner’s box that includes a screwdriver, brass screws, a pair of gloves and period correct roundels with brass lettering.
