The entry-level luxury hatchback that wears a badge of BMW – the 1 Series – has finally bid farewell to India. As per some reports, the assembly of the car was stopped in January only. The reason why BMW has pulled the plug on the hatchback is its continued poor sales numbers.

With over 4 years of its existence in the Indian market, the BMW 1 Series received its first mid-life facelift in 2015. However, despite the update the hatchback failed to attract buyers. Until it was discontinued, the BMW 1 Series was available in a single 118d Sport Line variant at Rs 30.3 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). The hatchback derives its power from a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine linked to an 8-speed ZF automatic gearbox. The power and torque figures of the hatch stand at 148bhp at 4,000rpm and 320Nm of torque between 1,500rpm – 3,000rpm respectively. It was the only rear-wheel-drive (RWD) vehicle in its category. Compared to its closest rival Volvo V40, the BMW 1 Series is less powerful yet had a higher price tag. This was probably one of the reasons why it couldn’t do well.  Packed with a 2.0-litre turbo engine the V40 delivers 150bhp against 350Nm of torque. The price of Volvo hatchback falls between 26.75 lakh – 30.25 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), thus making it around Rs 3.55 lakh cheaper than the 1 Series. The updated 1 Series was longer and taller than its predecessor. The hatch appears quite premium with elements like bi-xenon headlamps, large signature grille, twin exhaust pipes and large L-shaped taillamps. The list of features includes iDrive infotainment system with a 6.5-inch free-standing display, an optional dual-zone automatic climate control, chrome surround knobs and buttons and multiple upholstery options.
