Bigger, 5-door Maruti Jimny Will Be Launched in India
Maruti Suzuki had showcased the much-anticipated 3-door Suzuki Jimny mini off-roader at the 2020 Auto Expo. The SUV is rumoured to be launched in India in early 2021. The production of the 3-door model is likely to be commenced from May 2020 at the Suzuki’s Sanand based plant in Gujarat. However, the company will start producing the 3-door Jimny for the export market.
A new media report claims that Maruti Suzuki is readying a bigger and 5-door version of the Jimny for the Indian market. It is expected that the larger cabin and addition of rear doors will make the 5-door Maruti Jimny more suitable for the family buyers in India. The SUV gets Suzuki’s Smartplay infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support. However, the stretched dimensions and longer wheelbase could impact the off-road capabilities of the SUV.
The 5-door Maruti Jimny will be based on the ladder-frame chassis, featuring rigid axles at both ends and four-drive layout with low-range transfer case. The SUV will be powered by a 1.5-litre K15B petrol engine that also powers the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Ertiga and the Vitara Brezza. This engine is capable of producing 103bhp of power and 138Nm of torque. Transmission choices will include a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed torque convertor automatic.
The 5-door Maruti Jimny will be retailed via the NEXA premium dealership network. The company is planning to price the upcoming SUV under Rs 10 lakh. It will rival against the likes of the Force Gurkha and the upcoming Mahindra Thar. The SUV could also impact the sales of the Mahindra XUV300 and the Vitara Brezza. The new model will be introduced as a replacement for the legendary Gypsy SUV.
