The Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5-door SUV has just got its first India unveiling at the Auto Expo 2023. It’s essentially the long wheelbase version of the Jimny that made its India debut at the last edition of the mega automotive event. The carmaker hasn’t yet revealed its market launch date, but rumour has it that the model will hit showrooms by August 2023. The new 5-door Jimny will compete against the upcoming 5-door versions of the Mahindra Thar and Force Gurkha.
Visually, the 5-door Jimny looks similar to its 3-door counterpart. What differentiate it are the two extra doors, longer wheelbase and bigger bodyshell. The SUV sits on a wheelbase of 2550mm, which is 300mm longer than the 3-door version (2250mm).
Based on the ladder frame chassis, the overall length, width and height of the SUV stand at 3850mm, 1645mm and 1730mm respectively. It has a ground clearance of 210mm and carries a kerb weight of 1190kg. The 5-door Maruti Jimny has the signature boxy body style along with the newly-designed door for the second row passengers.
Some of its key design elements include the LED headlamps with washer, optimized bumpers, drip rail, flared fenders with pronounced black plastic cladding, chunky wheels, new, extended portion behind the rear door and a differently designed glass area surrounded by thick pillars at both sides. The rear section appears similar to the 3-door Jimny, featuring a door-mounted spare tyre with black covering, side opening door with exposed hinges and the taillamps.
Powering the new Maruti SUV could be the 1.5L K15B petrol engine with SHVS mild hybrid tech that does duty in the Ciaz sedan. The gasoline unit churns out a maximum power of 102bhp and 130Nm of torque. It can be had with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic gearbox.
The 5-door Maruti Jimny will offer Suzuki’s AllGrip Pro 4WD system with a manual transfer case and low range gear. One can switch lanes by shifting the transfer lever from 2H to 4H on the fly.
The all-new Jimny SUV offers a black interior with the “scratch-resistant surfaces”. It comes equipped with a 9-inch touchscreen SmartPlay Pro+ infotainment system, Arkamys surround sense, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, leather wrapped steering wheel, cruise control, climate control, ride-in assist grip passenger side and rearX2, central door locking, steering mounted controls, TFT colour display MID and more.
With respect to safety, the new Maruti SUV offers 6 airbags, electronic stability program, anti-lock braking system, electronic brake-force distribution, brake limited slip differential, hill hold and descent control, brake assist function, rear view camera, side impact door beams, seatbelt pre-tensioner/force limiter, Isofix child seat anchorages, 3-point emergency locking retractor seatbelts and engine immobilizer.
