Aprilia Readying Sub-400cc Tuono and RS Models For India

On the sidelines of the launch of the Vespa Racing Sixties, Diego Graffi, Chairman and MD, Piaggio India said that the company will be entering the sub-400cc motorcycle segment. The company will introduce the sub-400cc versions of the Aprilia Tuono and RS models.

The company will soon start working on the platform for the new motorcycles. It is likely that the final products will arrive in our market in the next 2-3 years. At the 2018 Auto Expo, Piaggio had showcased the 150cc versions of the Tuono and RS in India. These bikes were supposed to be launched during this year’s Auto Expo; that didn’t happen.

Piaggio India believes that the brand is too late to enter the 125-150cc segment in India. The company will be focusing on the rising 300-400cc segment, which is dominated by players like the KTM 390 Duke and the TVS Apache RR310. The company is already selling a fully-faired Aprilia GPR250 motorcycle in the Chinese market; however, India will receive a different model.

The company has started that the India-spec motorcycle will be an all-new product with no similarities with the Chinese-spec model. The motorcycle is likely to feature a single-cylinder engine, which will help Aprilia to keep its cost down. It is expected that the new motorcycles will share the design cues with the bigger Tuono V4 1100 naked and RSV4 1100 fully-faired bikes. Likely to be launched by 2022, the new Aprilia motorcycles will be positioned against the KTM Duke 390 and the RC390.
