All-New Volkswagen Beetle Electric In The Works

Volkswagen Beetle

The next generation Volkswagen Beetle is expected to be powered by a battery electric powertrain.

The iconic Volkswagen Beetle will be phased out from global markets next year and the current Beetle will be the model’s last generation. Volkswagen revived the iconic car as a front-wheel-drive model in 1997, and the current Beetle is in its second generation. What’s interesting is that the German automaker is planning an all-electric Beetle.

The next generation Volkswagen Beetle is expected to be powered by a battery electric powertrain. Adding to it, the next-generation model could be a four-door car instead of the trademark two-door body style. In fact, the next model could return to the rear-wheel drive setup, which was first offered in the original ‘Type 1’ 1945 Bettle. It is expected to be developed on the MEB architecture, which is VW’s flexible electric vehicle architecture. This platform will also underpin the company’s future electric cars under its new ID badge.

Volkswagen is aiming to introduce a range of “emotional” cars including the Beetle, which has a strong fan following globally. The first such emotional model will be the ID Buzz microbus in 2022, which is inspired by the classic VW camper van. Before ID Buzz microbus, the company will launch more mainstream electric vehicles. Besides ID hatchback, the company will launch the ID Crozz SUV and ID Vizzion sedan. Earlier this year, VW design chief Klaus Bischoff said that the company will focus on producingthe bigger-selling electric cars before making a decision on a Bettle EV. The company also has a sketch of how a four-door Beetle based on the MEB platform look like. However, the decision for introducing next Beetle electric will take another couple of years.
