A new media report claims that Toyota has started working on the next generation Vios sedan for the Philippines market. It is the best-selling Toyota in Philippines, while the Avanza is best-selling model in Indonesia. The report claims that the all-new Toyota Vios will be unveiled in 2022, most preciously in August 2022.
For people not in the know, the Toyota Vios is sold as Yaris Ativ in Thailand. Toyota had also launched the Yaris sedan in India; however, recently discontinued due to poor sales. The Yaris assembly line will be used to develop a new mid-sized SUV for the Indian market.
The current Vios sedan was introduced in 2018; however, it is basically revamped version of the original model launched in 2013. The sedan is already 10 years old, and a new model could be introduced for the Southeast Asia. It is reported that the all-new Toyota Vios is codenamed D92A. It is expected that the new model could be based on the Daihatsu New Global Architecture aka DNGA.
Few years ago Daihatsu had showcased the Daihatsu DN-F sedan in Indonesia. The new sedan could be the production version of the DN-F sedan. Similarly, the next generation Toyota Avanza will also use the DNGA platform. In fact, the Daihatsu Xenia and the new Avanza will be inspired by the DN Multisix MPV concept.
The report further claims that the company will also introduce a hybrid version of the Yaris Ativ/Vios. The hybrid model is reportedly to be launched by August 2023. The sedan could get the new 1.5L hybrid drive. Toyota currently offers a 1.8L hybrid drivetrain with the Corolla Cross hybrid and Corolla Altis hybrid.
In India, Toyota is not likely to launch the Vios sedan. Instead, the company will launch the re-badged version of the Ciaz sedan. Adding to it, Toyota-Suzuki JV is developing a new mid-sized SUV for the Indian market. The new SUV is likely to be based on the DNGA platform, which also underpins the Toyota Raize and the Daihatsu Rocky.
