All-new Toyota Compact SUV in the Works; to Rival Hyundai Creta

2019 Toyota RAV4 Unveiled Side Profile

The all-new Toyota SUV will be based on the new TNGA-C platform.

It was speculated that Toyota is planning to a mid-sized SUV/Crossover for the Indian market. This SUV is expected to be priced between Rs 15 lakh and Rs 20 lakh, and will rival Tata Harrier and Jeep Compass. Interestingly, Toyota is reportedly working on an all-new global SUV model. It will be positioned below the CH-R crossover, which is on sale in select international markets.

The report claims that the SUV is currently in very early stage of development. It will be built on the new TNGA-C architecture that also underpins the Toyota Prius hybrid and the all-new Toyota Corolla sedan.

The new Toyota SUV will come with a more SUV-ish styling rather than the crossover-coupe like design of the CH-R. The new model is expected to share powertrain with the new Corolla sedan. This means that the brand also plans the hybrid version of the SUV.

The new Toyota SUV is expected to be unveiled in the second half of 2020. To be positioned below CH-R, the new SUV will challenge the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Nissan Kicks/Juke and the Honda HR-V in the international markets.

In India, Toyota will launch the re-badged version of the Maruti Suzuki Baleno hatchback in the second half of 2019. The company will also launch a sub-4 meter SUV in 2020, which will be the re-engineered Maruti Vitara Brezza. Adding to it, the all-new Corolla sedan will arrive in India in 2020.
