The new Maruti WagonR is based on the lighter & stronger Heartect platform
Maruti Suzuki has officially started taking pre-orders for the new generation Wagon R hatchback. Interested buyers can pre-book the hatchback at all Maruti authorised dealerships or online at an initial token amount of Rs 11,000. The company has also released a new video which reveals the design and interior of the new Maruti Wagon R. The hatchback is scheduled to be launched on January 23, 2019.
It was speculated that the all-new Wagon R will be based on the modified version of the existing platform. However, the official video reveals that the new model is based on the lightweight HEARTECT platform. This platform will make the hatchback stronger and lighter than the outgoing model. The new teaser video also reveals the design of the hatchback, which is completely different than that of its predecessor.
The all-new Maruti Wagon R retains the tall-boy design and features a floating roof effect, thanks to the black treatment in the C-pillar. The hatchback gets new prominent grille, new headlamp setup and vertically stacked tail-lamp. The new model also grows in size, as it is around 35mm longer and 125mm wider than the outgoing car. The increase in size results into more space for rear occupants inside the cabin. The hatchback will be available in 3 trim levels – LXi, VXi and ZXi. Driver-side airbag, ABS with EBD, seat belt reminder, speed alert and rear parking sensor will come as standard, while dual front airbags will be offered as optional.
The new Maruti Wagon R’s top-end model also gets Suzuki’s SmartPlay infotainment system with a 7.0-inch touchscreen display. This system is compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The vehicle also gets multi-functional steering wheel with controls for audio and telephony. Also See – New Maruti WagonR Vs Old – How Different They Are?
The all-new Maruti Wagon R will be available with 2 engine options – a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder petrol and a 1.2-litre 4-cylinder petrol. While the former is good for 67bhp and 90Nm of torque, the 1.2L unit offers 82bhp and 115Nm of torque. Transmission options include a 5-speed manual and an AMT unit.
Thanks to the new HEARTECT platform, the new Maruti WagonR will be around 60kgs lighter which results into higher fuel efficiency. The new model is expected to be around Rs 30,000 expensive over the current model. It will directly rival the likes of Hyundai Santro, Datsun GO and Tata Tiago.
