Suzuki Vitara India

The 7-seater Maruti Suzuki Vitara is reportedly to be unveiled at the 2020 Delhi Auto Expo

Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest carmaker is aiming at SUVs to further boost sales in the country. The company will launch a micro SUV based on the Future S Concept, which was unveiled at the 2018 Delhi Auto Expo. It was speculated that Maruti will launch the global Vitara SUV to take on Hyundai Creta and others; that didn’t happen. In fact, the global Suzuki Vitara has been spotted multiple times on Indian roads.

If latest media report is to be believed, Maruti Suzuki is working on a 7-seater premium SUV for the Indian market. The new model will be the 7-seater version of the global Vitara. The report further claims that the India-specific Vitara will make its debut at the 2020 Delhi Auto Expo. In the C-segment SUV segment, the 7-seater Vitara will challenge the likes of Hyundai Creta, Jeep Compass and Tata Harrier.

What’s interesting is that Hyundai is also working on the next-generation Creta SUV. It will be available in 2 seating layouts – 5 and 7. In fact, Kia Motors is also considering the 7-seater version of the upcoming SP concept based SUV. The global Vitara is built on the Global C platform, which also underpins the Vitara Brezza sub-4 meter SUV. This platform is already heavily localised, which should help Maruti to achieve aggressive pricing for the bigger.

Previous media reports claim that the 7-seater model could be called the Grand Vitara. The SUV could be powered by a detuned version of the Fiat’s 2.0-litre MJD II diesel engine. This engine currently powers the Jeep Compass and the Tata Harrier. In fact, MG Motors first SUV for Indian market will also receive this powertrain. Maruti will also introduce the petrol powered model, though details on the same are yet to be revealed.
