The next-generation Mahindra Thar will be based on the GEN 3 platform that also underpins the Scorpio SUV.

We informed you earlier that Mahindra will launch the next-generation Thar, Bolero, XUV500 and the Scorpio in the next 18 months. The company is most likely to launch the new-gen Thar in the second half of 2019. In fact, testing of the new model has already been started. This is for the first time, the 2020 Mahindra Thar has been spotted with production-spec body panels.

The next-gen Mahindra Thar will grow in size and will be wider than the outgoing model. The SUV retains the original design, but the body panels are likely to be all-new. It is expected that the front and rear will receive comprehensive updates in the form of new features and revised styling. The spotted model was equipped with new doors with handles positioned lower than before for better ergonomics.

The all-new model comes with smaller canopy and the higher-set rear deck could be the reason behind this. At the back, the new Mahindra Thar gets a tailgate-mounted spare wheel and vertically-stacked tail-lamps. The new model will be based on the new GEN 3 platform, which also underpins the TUV300 and the Scorpio. Thanks to the new platform, the new model will offer improved drivability and comfort. However, this new platform will result into 10% lesser wheel articulation that could impact the off-road capability.

The next-generation Mahindra Thar will be strong enough to meet the upcoming safety and crash test norms. It will get dual front airbags, seat belt reminder, rear parking sensors, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors and speed alert system as standard. The top-spec model could get a touchscreen infotainment system, multi-functional steering wheel, rear parking camera and other features.

The next-generation Mahindra Thar will also receive an all-new 2.0-litre diesel engine that is likely to produce around 140bhp and 300Nm of Torque. This engine will also power the Scorpio and the XUV500, but in different state of tunes.
