After Hyryder, Toyota Will Launch The Innova HyCross Hybrid

Toyota has recently unveiled the new Urban Cruiser Hyryder mid-sized SUV in the Indian market. The SUV has started reaching dealerships for customers preview. The new Hyryder production will commence from August at Toyota’s Bidadi based plant in Karnataka. Interested buyers can pre-book the SUV online or at authorised dealership by paying a token amount of Rs 25,000.

The new Urban Cruiser HyRyder is the latest Toyota to offer a fuel efficient Hybrid powertrain. The SUV is claimed to run up to 25km entirely on electric motor. It is also the only vehicle in its category to offer all-wheel-drive setup, but with a mild hybrid setup.

2023 Toyota Innova Hybrid

Not just Hyryder, Toyota is also developing a new Innova HyCross MPV for the Indian market. The 3-row MPV has already been spotted testing couple of times. It is reportedly to make global debut during festive season, around Diwali, while launch could take place before the end of this year or early next year.

As the name suggests, the new Innova HyCross will come with a strong hybrid powertrain. It will be sold alongside the existing Innova Crysta, which is hugely popular among fleet as well as private customers. The existing model will receive a mild makeover and is expected to target fleet operators in the country.

The current model is based on a ladder-on-frame chassis; however, the new Innova HyCross will be based on a car-like monocoque frame. It is reportedly to be based on the Toyota’s global TNGA-C or GA-C (Global Architecture). It is likely to have a wheelbase of around 2,850mm, which is 100mm longer than the current Innova Crysta. The new model will also come with more modern, crossover-ish profile. It could share some of the design highlights with the new Veloz MPV, which is on sale in Indonesia and Thailand. Due to monocoque architecture, the new Innova HyCross will be lighter than the outgoing model. This will improve its performance as well as efficiency.

Previous reports suggest that the new Toyota Innova HyCross will be powered by a 2.0-litre petrol hybrid powertrain. The company is expected to use the localised version of the new THS II (Toyota Hybrid System II). This system has a twin-motor setup calibrated to deliver high ‘step-off’ torque and better efficiency. The new Innova won’t be offered with a diesel engine.
