A More Powerful Tata Harrier with 178bhp Engine in the Works

Tata Harrier SUV

The new Tata Harrier is expected to receive the powerful version of the existing 2.0-litre diesel engine, which is likely to offer 180PS of power

Tata has recently introduced the much-anticipated Harrier SUV at a very aggressive price point. While the base variant is priced at Rs 12.69 lakh, the top-spec model cost Rs 16.25 lakh (ex-showroom). What’s interesting is that Tata is also working on a more powerful version of the Harrier. A new media report claims that the performance version of the SUV will come with 180PS engine. This will make it more powerful than the Jeep Compass.

The Tata Harrier‘s 2.0-litre diesel engine is basically the same unit that powers the Jeep Compass. However, Tata has de-tuned this engine to better suit the character of the Harrier. While powering the Jeep Compass, the 2.0-litre engine produces 170bhp of power and 350Nm of peak torque. On the other hand, the Harrier offers 138bhp of power and 350Nm of torque. The Tata Harrier is also 91kgs heavier than the Jeep Compass. Also See – Tata Harrier Vs Jeep Compass

The reduction in power does not have any impact on the Harrier’s driveability. In fact, it offers better low-speed driving experience and comfort while city driving. The more powerful version will arrive for the enthusiasts.

It is expected that the 180PS, 2.0-litre diesel engine will debut in the 7-seater Harrier (Codenamed H7X). This model will be longer and heavier than the 5-seater model. If this engine powers the Harrier, the SUV will be launched under the Tata’s performance wing, JTP. The 7-Seater model will also receive an automatic gearbox and all-wheel-drive layout. The Tata Harrier directly rivals the likes of Hyundai Creta, Jeep Compass, Nissan Kicks and Mahindra XUV500.
