5-Door Maruti Jimny Might Join Indian Army Fleet

The 5-door Maruti Suzuki Jimny is all set to go on sale in India on 7th June 2023. The lifestyle off-road SUV has created buzz among enthusiasts and the proof of it lies in the fact the model received 30,000 bookings till date. In fact, the Indian armed forces have expressed interest in the Jimny. Shashank Srivastava, Senior Executive Director – Marketing and Sales, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. has revealed that the 5-door Maruti Jimny might join the Indian army after its official launch. The carmaker is currently studying requirements of the armed forces in terms of specifications.

If it happens, the 5-door Jimny will come as a worthy replacement of the Maruti Gypsy that served the Indian armed forces for decades. Just so you know, the globally Suzuki Jimny has 50 years of legacy and it’s the descendant of cars called the Light Jeep 10 (LJ10) equipped with 359cc, two-stroke, air-cooled inline twin engine.

The SUV possess some serious off-road capabilities, thanks to its robust ladder frame, ample approach, breakover and departure angles, 3-link rigid axle suspension with coil spring and 4WD with a low-range transfer gear. After multiple generation changes, the Jimny is ready to hit Indian shores and that too in its 5-door avatar.

The 5-door Maruti Jimny comes with Suzuki’s AllGrip Pro drivetrain system that has a dedicated low-ratio transfer case. It offers three drive modes – 2H, 4H and 4L. The lifestyle SUV has a 36 degree approach angle, a 50 degree departure angle and a 24 degree ramp over angle.

Features such as a high ground clearance (210mm) and lightweight body built further enhance its off-road capabilities. Under the hood, the SUV features a 1.5L K15B petrol engine that’s good enough for 103bhp and 134Nm. It comes with two gearbox options – a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed torque convertor automatic.
