5-Door Mahindra Thar – Top Five Things To Know

The homegrown automaker, Mahindra has recently launched the 4×2 (RWD) version of the 3-door Thar with a smaller capacity diesel engine. The company is also readying a new Thar 5-door model, which has already been spotted multiple times on the Indian roads. A new set of spy images reveal some interesting details about the upcoming 5-door Mahindra Thar –

1. Engine Options

It is expected to receive more powerful petrol and diesel engine options. The powertrain options could be sourced from the Scorpio N. The 5-door Mahindra Thar is likely to come with two engine options – a 2.0-litre turbo petrol and a 2.2-litre turbo diesel. These engines are also offered with the 3-door Thar, Scorpio N and the XUV700. While powering the Scorpio N, the turbo petrol engine is capable of producing 200bhp of power at 5,000rpm and a peak torque of 370-380Nm. The turbo-diesel engine offers two states of tunes – 172bhp & 370Nm with MT & 400Nm with AT, and a 130bhp and 300Nm of torque. Transmission choices include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic.

While powering the 3-door Thar, the 2.2L turbo diesel engine produces 132bhp and 300Nm of torque and the 2.0L petrol unit delivers 152bhp with 300Nm of torque.

2. 4×4 & 4×2 Versions

The latest sightings reveal that the 5-door Mahindra Thar will be offered with both 4×4 and 4×2 drivetrain options. The 5-door model will be based on Scorpio N’s ladder-on-frame chassis, which will be modified to accommodate a smaller lifestyle SUV. Similar to the 3-door model, the 5-door Mahindra Thar will have 4×4 system and a manual-shift transfer case with a low ratio as standard fitment.

Mahindra is also preparing a RWD or 4×2 version of the Thar, which is confirmed in latest spy images. The SUV has been spotted recently without a 4×4 lever on the centre console. It is expected that 5-door 4×2 will be offered with both the petrol and diesel engines. However, this version is not likely to receive the 118bhp, 1.5L turbo diesel engine that powers the 4×2 Thar 3-door.

3. Design

5-Door Mahindra Thar Launch

The new 5-door Mahindra Thar will ride on around 300mm longer wheelbase compared to the 3-door model. It is also expected to receive new body panels. Mahindra engineers are likely to increase the track or width between the wheels to maintain an optimum wheelbase-to-track ratio for stability. The SUV will have an extra rear door for the second-row occupants, and the length will be significantly increased. The SUV will retain the boxy proportions, rear door-mounted spare wheel, signature grille, round-shaped headlamps and flared wheel arches. The SUV is also likely to come with a fixed roof.

4. Interior

The overall dashboard and central console design will be largely identical to the 3-door model. The company is likely to add new features in the 5-door Thar. It is expected to receive features like a revised infotainment system with smartphone connectivity, front centre armrest, and a sunglass holder. Thanks to the longer wheelbase, the 5-door Mahindra Thar will offer more space in the second row. The SUV could be offered in both 4 and 5-seat layout, as the spotted models were seen with two individual rear seats. The 5-door model will receive a three seat bench layout in the second-row. Moreover, the longer wheelbase and larger length will allow Mahindra to create a bigger boot.

5. Launch Timeline

Mahindra is likely to launch the new 5-door Mahindra Thar during festive season, before Diwali. The SUV could make its debut around Independence Day. It will rival the upcoming 5-door Force Gurkha, which is also likely to launch in our market this year.
