In fact, Maruti Suzuki estimated that the price gap between petrol and diesel cars will go up to Rs 2.5 lakh from the current 1 lakh. Maruti Suzuki has already announced to phase out diesel cars from the Indian market. Maruti Dzire & Swift – 28.4kmpl

The Dzire is currently the best-selling sedan car in our market, recording a constant sale of around 20,000 per month. Based on the lightweight HEARTECT platform, the Maruti Dzire is claimed to offer an ARAI certified fuel economy of 28.4kmpl. The Swift is also one of the best-selling hatchbacks in India. It also returns 28.4kmpl. Both cars are powered by a 1.3-litre MJD diesel engine that produces 74bhp and 200Nm of torque. Transmission options include a 5-speed manual and AMT unit. This engine will discontinue by April 2020.

Maruti Baleno – 27.39kmpl

Similar to the Swift twins, the Baleno diesel is one of the best-selling cars in India. This model is powered by the Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre MJD diesel engine paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox. Based on the same light-weight HEARTECT platform, the Baleno claimed to deliver an ARAI certified fuel economy of 27.39kmpl. The Baleno diesel will also be discontinued by April 2020.

Honda Amaze – 27.4kmpl

Honda’s current best-selling car – new Amaze compact SUV directly rival the Maruti Suzuki Dzire and Hyundai Xcent. Based on the lighter and stronger platform, the new Honda Amaze shares the diesel engine with the Jazz and the City. Transmission choices include a 6-speed manual and a 7-step CVT automatic. While the manual version is claimed to return 27.4kmpl, the automatic delivers 23.8kmpl.

Honda Jazz – 27.3kmpl

The globally popular Honda Jazz nameplate is available in India in petrol and diesel guise. It is powered by a 1.5-litre i-DTEC diesel engine that produces 99bhp and 200Nm of torque. Power is transmitted to the front wheels via a 6-speed manual gearbox. This diesel engine is highly fuel efficient with ARAI rated mileage of 27.3kmpl.

Honda Civic – 26.8kmpl

This is the most exciting model in our list of best mileage cars in India. For the first time, the new Civic is available with a diesel engine option. It is powered by a 1.6-litre i-DTEC diesel engine that also powers the new CR-V. Paired to a 6-speed manual gearbox, this powertrain produces 118bhp and 300Nm of torque. Despite being a premium sedan, the new Civic is one of the most fuel efficient models in our market. It is claimed to return ARAI certified fuel economy of 26.8kmpl.
