4 Big New Car Launches From Tata and Mahindra

Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra, the two major Indian auto manufacturers, are ready to launch a range of new vehicles in the next couple of years. Here, we have listed top 4 new car launches from each one of them.

Upcoming New Tata Cars

1. Tata Harrier Turbo Petrol

Tata’s highly popular premium compact SUV – Harrier – will soon receive a turbo petrol engine. The model will come with Tata’s new 1.5L turbocharged petrol motor with direct injection technology. It’s likely to deliver power around 150bhp. The same engine will also be offered on the Gravitas model lineup. The Tata Harrier petrol might also get an automatic gearbox with paddle shifters and a ‘Sport’ mode, but at a later stage. No changes will be made to its exterior and interior.

2. Tata Gravitas

The home-grown carmaker will bring in the Harrier-based 6/7-seater SUV near next year. Called the Tata Gravitas, the model made its first appearance in its concept form (Buzzard) at the Geneva Motor Show last year. The SUV will share its platform, powertrain and most of features with the Harrier. Though, it will look slightly different and have some extra features to offer. It will be bigger and more spacious than its younger sibling. The Gravitas will come with the 2.0L (168bhp/350Nm) diesel engine with 6-speed manual and automatic gearbox options.

After Gravitas, Tata will launch the HBX concept based mini SUV early next year. If reports are to be believed, the production-ready version the Tata HBX might be named Tata Timero. The mini SUV will feature Tata’s Impact 2.0 design language and is likely to retain most of its design bits from the concept. Engine setup of the upcoming Tata mini SUV might include the newly-developed 1.2L turbo petrol and 1.2L naturally aspirated petrol units. Both manual and AMT gearboxes will be on offer. The Timero will be placed against Maruti Suzuki’s S-Presso.

4. Tata Altroz EV

Tata Motors had confirmed that it will introduce the electric version of the Altroz hatchback next year. The electric hatch is likely to share its powertrain with the Nexon EV that comes with an IP67 certified 30.2kWh battery pack and a permanent magnet AC motor. Reports suggest that the Altroz EV will promise range between 250km-300km. It will come with both standard and DC fast charging options. Similar the electric Nexon, the hatchback might get the new ZConnet app offering 35 connected car features. In terms of design, the Tata Altroz EV will be slightly different from the regular model.

1. New-Gen Mahindra Thar

The second-generation Mahindra Thar is ready to hit showrooms on 2nd October, 2020. The model lineup will come in three variants (AX, AX (O) and LX), 3 roof top options (soft, hard and convertible) and 6 colour schemes. For the first time, the off-road SUV receives a new 2.0L mStallion petrol (150bhp/320Nm) and a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. It can also be had with 2.2L (130bhp/320Nm) diesel motor and a manual transmission. The new Thar has better approach, departure and ramp up angles, new suspension setup, improved water wading capacity, mechanical locking differential and shift-on-the-fly 4X manual shift transfer case. All aforementioned features enhance its off-road performance. Some of its other key highlights include a touchscreen infotainment system, factory-fitted hard top, electronic program with roll over mitigation and more.

2. New-Gen Mahindra XUV500

Mahindra XUV500 SUV is ready to witness a generation early next year. Major changes will be made to its exterior and interior. Its design and styling will be inspired by the Mahindra Funster concept that broke cover at this year’s Auto Expo. The 2021 Mahindra XUV500 will come with a new 2.0L turbo diesel engine that’s likely to deliver power close to 180bhp. It will also be offered with a new 2.0L mStallion turbo petrol motor pushing out 190bhp with 380Nm. The new XUV500 can be had either with a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox.

3. New-Gen Mahindra Scorpio

The new-generation Mahindra Scorpio has also been scheduled for the early next year. The SUV will underpin the modified version of the body-on-ladder frame and witness noticeable dimensional changes. The SUV will come with the front facing third row of seats along with features such as a new touchscreen infotainment system, leather seats, electric sunroof, head-up display and more. Powering the 2021 Mahindra Scorpio will be a new 2.2L turbo diesel and a new 2.0L mStallion turbo petrol engine making 160bhp and 160bhp with over 350Nm respectively. There will also be a newly-developed 6-speed manual gearbox with optional 4WD system.

4. Mahindra XUV300 Electric SUV

The Mahindra XUV300 electric compact SUV made its first public appearance at the 2020 Auto Expo. Its production version is likely to hit roads sometime next year. Visually, the electric iteration will look slightly different from the regular model. Interestingly, the XUV300 electric will be brand’s first production model to underpin the MESMA (Mahindra Electric Scalable and Modular Architecture) platform. It will come with 40kWh and 60kWh battery options delivering range over 370km and over 450km respectively. Once launched, the Mahindra eXUV300 will take on the Tata Nexon EV.
