2020 Mahindra Thar – Top 5 Changes
We have seen multiple spy pictures of the new-generation Mahindra Thar revealing its changes made inside and out. The SUV’s all-new model will make its first public appearance at the 2020 Auto Expo, followed by its launch. The biennial event is slated to happen from 7th to 12th February. Here, we have listed the top 5 changes that will be made to the 2020 Mahindra Thar.
1. New Platform
The 2020 Mahindra Thar will underpin the thoroughly updated GEN2 ladder-frame platform that will meet the Bharat New Vehicle Safety Assessment Program (BNVSAP). The same architecture will be used for the new-generation Mahindra Scorpio and XUV500. The new platform will reduce the wheel-articulation by around 10%. The tuned suspension and wider front tracks will further enhance its performance.
2. Bigger And Safer
Compared to the existing model, the 2020 Mahindra will carry bigger dimensions. That means, the SUV will have more cabin space to offer. It will have better structure integrity, thanks to its new platform. All variants of the SUV are likely to get dual airbags, rear parking sensors, seat belt reminders and ABS (anti-lock braking system) with EBD (electronic brake-force distribution) as standard safety fitments.
3. More Powerful
Official engine details of the 2020 Mahindra Thar are yet to be revealed. Though, it’s likely to get a new 2.2L diesel engine that will meet the upcoming BS6 emission norms. It will deliver power close to 140bhp, thus making it around 35bhp more powerful than the existing 2.5L CRDe oil burner.
4. Petrol Engine
Rumour also has it that the new 2020 Mahindra Thar will receive a 2.2L petrol engine for the first time. The new gasoline motor could be borrowed from the Mahindra XUV500 and deliver power worth 140bhp with 320Nm of torque. The new petrol unit will be paired to a 6-speed manual gearbox.
5. Two Seats Layouts
Interestingly, the 2020 Mahindra Thar will be offered with 5-seats and 6-seats configurations. The SUV will get the factory-fitted hardtop along with the bucket seats up front and front facing rear seats. The all-black interior theme with features such as a new instrument console with a large MID in centre, newly-designed dashboard, and steering wheel with mounted controls will add a premium touch to its interior.
