2020 Mahindra Thar To Be M&M’s First Launch Post Lockdown
The new-generation Mahindra Thar is surely one of the much-anticipated launches of this year. Speaking to carandbike, Veejay Ram Nakra, CEO – Automotive Business, Mahindra and Mahindra, has revealed that the 2020 Mahindra Thar will be the first launch from the brand post lockdown. Earlier, the off-road SUV was reported to arrive in April, which was delayed due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis and the nationwide lockdown.
While the next-generation Thar will retain the original boxy and upright stance, it will receive some noticeable changes inside and out. On the outside, the SUV will feature LED headlamps, a higher set front bumper with integrated fog lamps, alloy wheels, LED taillamps and new body panels. Design bits such as round halogen headlamps and front fender-mounted turn indicators will be retained.
For the first time, the Thar will be offered with the factory-fitted hard top along with the regular removable roof top option. Comprehensive changes will be made inside the cabin as well. The 2020 Mahindra Thar will come with a newly-designed dashboard with integrated touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity. Though, it could be reserved for the top-spec trim. The three-door hardtop version will have four power windows. The list of features will also include a new instrument cluster, Scorpio-inspired steering wheel and gear knob, dual airbags, speed alert system, rear parking sensors and ABS with EBD.
Interestingly, the 2020 Mahindra Thar will be offered with both petrol and diesel engine options. It might mark debut of Mahindra’s new 2.0L mStallion petrol engine that was previewed at this year’s Auto Expo. The diesel variant will use the 2.2L oil burner making around 140bhp. Initially, the new Thar will come with a 5-speed manual gearbox only.
