The German carmaker has finally launched the new-generation Audi Q5 in India at a starting price of Rs 53.25 lakh (ex-showroom, Pan India). The SUV’s new model has replaced its first generation which was launched back in 2011. This is the first major launch from the German carmaker this year. The new Audi A5 2018 had its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show in September, 2017. In the luxury SUV space, Audi’s SUV will continue to compete against the cars like Mercedes-Benz GLC, BMW X3, Volvo XC60 and Land Rover Discovery Sport.

In Audi’s Indian product lineup, the new-gen Q5 fits between the Q3 sedan and the Q7 SUV. The 2018 Audi Q5 SUV carline comes in two trim levels – Premium Plus and Technology – priced at Rs 53.25 lakh and Rs 57.60 lakh respectively. Sitting on the Volkswagen Group’s MLB Evo platform, the 2018 Audi Q5 shares some its design and styling bits with its larger sibling – Q7. Interestingly, the MLB Evo architecture makes it 100kg lighter than the first generation. It’s the same platform that has already been used in A4 sedan and Q7 SUV. The SUV new model has one of the most aerodynamic designs in its category. Compared to the previous model, the new Audi Q5 2018 features a sharper design. Face of the car has been revised with a larger single frame chrome grille flaked by LED headlamps and revised LED DRLs (daytime running lights).

The high trim has been exclusively offered with Audi’s signature Matrix LED headlamps with dynamic turn indicators. The SUV also gets muscular front bumper with large air intakes. The side profile, however, looks exactly similar to the old model. Moving towards the rear, the car gets new LED tail lamps with optional dynamic turn signals, re-designed bumper with rear diffuser and a roof mounted spoiler. Surpassing the old model, the 2018 Audi Q5 offers more cabin space for five occupants.  Other major change that you will notice inside the cabin is Audi’s 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit display replacing the conventional instrument cluster and a larger 8.3-inch infotainment display with MMI Touch. While a 7.0-inch free standing screen is standard across the carline, the range-topping trim gets a larger 8.3-inch screen.

Features such as Head-Up-Display (HUD) unit (optional), Audi MMI infotainment system, the Bang & Olufsen 3D sound system, ambient lighting, navigation with Google Earth,  interior leather/leatherette interior upholstery, electrical adjustable steering wheel with gear shift paddles, electrically closing and opening of boot lid, cruise control with speed limiter function, three-zone deluxe automatic air conditioner, Predictive Efficiency Assist and wireless charging are also on offer. No changes have been made under the skin. The 2018 Audi Q5 uses the same 2.0-litre, four-cylinder TDI diesel engine paired to a 7-speed, dual-clutch S-tronic gearbox. This oil burner can produce a maximum power output of 190bhp between 3,800rpm – 4,000rpm, while yielding a peak torque of 400Nm at 1,750rpm – 3,000rpm. It accelerates 0-100kmph in 7.9 seconds, and offers a top speed of 218kmph. The SUV comes with the Quattro all-wheel drive system and Audi Drive Select feature that includes a dedicated off-road mode. Audi India will also introduce a new 2.0-litre TFSI petrol engine on the new Q5 at a later stage.

Suspension setup has been carried over from the Audi A4. The SUV comes fitted with a new five-link front and rear suspension with steel springs and adjustable dampers. It also gets optional air suspension and a self-leveling feature that not only improve its towing ability, but enhance the overall driving dynamics as well. For the record, Audi claims that 2018 Q5 offers ‘exceptionally’ low wind noise and minimal vibrations in the cabin. The new Audi Q5 2018 has more cabin space to offer – all thanks to its increased length, width and a longer wheelbase. The SUV comes with a new and more efficient air conditioner unit. While the three-spoke multifunction steering wheel comes as standard, the steering wheel with heating function is optional. Its seats offer multiple pneumatic massage functions. What further enhance its comfort quotient are different seat adjustment angles and optional ambient lighting with 30 different shades. The 2018 Audi Q5 isn’t only more comfortable and feature-loaded, but a more practical package than the current model as well. The rear seat back of the SUV has three segment slit, while longitudinal and back angle adjustment are optional. Audi has also increased the boot space of the car. Now, it measures 610-litres with all seats up, and 1550-litres with the rear bench folded down.

It also gets several cargo loading solutions such as variably folding mat (standard), sensor control of the power tailgate (optional) and manual lowering of the body. It also offers Predictive Efficiency Assist that enables the navigation system learn routes and adjusts speed in line with traffic data.

The new Q5 comes with a pack of advanced safety equipment. Its driver assistance systems are categorised into three packages – Tour, City and Parking. The adaptive cruise control (ACC) (including traffic jam assist) controls steering movement in slow-moving traffic. Other key safety features include 8 airbags (including rear side airbags), auto hold function, tyre pressure monitoring system, predictive efficiency assistant, distance warning alerts, blind spot warning, Audi active lane assist, cross traffic assist rear, pre sense systems, park assist, etc.
