The rising demand for 3-row SUVs and MPVs has prompted automakers to introduce new 3-row vehicles in the country. Kia Motors had launched the Carens MPV, while Maruti Suzuki has recently updated its XL6 and Ertiga. These models have received an overwhelming response from car buyers. In the next 1 year, more brands will introduce multiple new MPVs in the country.
1. Hyundai Stargazer
The Korean automaker, Hyundai is all set to introduce the new Staria MPV in Indonesia at the 2022 GIIAS (Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show) in August. The new model is also expected to be launched in our market in 2023. It will be based on the same platform that underpins the Kia Carens. In the Indonesian market, the new Stargazer will challenge the Toyota Avanza, Mitsubishi Xpander and the Suzuki Ertiga.
Indonesian media reports that the new 3-row MPV will come in 4 trim levels – Active, Trend, Style and Prime. The new model will be powered by a 1.5L NA petrol engine that produces 113.4bhp and 144Nm of torque. Transmission options will include a 6-speed manual and an automatic transmission called IVT (Intelligent Variable Transmission). The India-spec model is likely to get the 113.4bhp, 1.5L turbo-diesel and the 138bhp, 1.4L turbo petrol.
2. Toyota Innova HyCross
Toyota has also registered two new names – the Hyryder and the Innova HyCross. The company will introduce the next-gen Innova with a hybrid powertrain. It is expected to be introduced before the end of this year, most probably around Diwali. The existing Innova Crysta will be sold alongside the new Innova HyCross.
Instead of a ladder-on frame chassis, the new Innova HyCross will be based on the Toyota’s global TNGA-C or GA-C. It is likely to have a wheelbase of around 2,850mm, which is 100mm longer than the current Innova Crysta. The new model is likely to be powered by a 2.0-litre petrol hybrid powertrain, which could be the localised version of the new THS II (Toyta Hybrid System II). This system has a twin-motor setup calibrated to deliver high ‘step-off’ torque and better efficiency.
