Several new all-electric cars along with some plug-in hybrids are set to launch soon in our market. Honda has officially announced to launch an all-new hybrid car in the Indian market in 2021. The new model is most likely to be the new City hybrid, which is already on sale in Indonesia and Thailand. The City e:HEV comes equipped with Honda’s Intelligent Multi-Mode Drive (i-MMD) hybrid system, which comprises of 108PS/253Nm electric motor that drives the wheels. It features a 1.5L Atkinson-cycle DOHC i-VTEC engine that produces 98PS between 5,600 to 6,400rpm and 127Nm between 4,500 and 5,000rpm, along with an integrated electric motor acting as a generator and a starter.

It features a single-speed gearbox paired to the petrol engine. The new City hybrid is claimed to return an impressive fuel economy of 27.8kmpl on the NEDC cycle. The new model is expected to be priced around Rs 18-20 lakh.

Toyota is reportedly introducing the RAV4 Hybrid SUV under the Indian Government’s new import norms, which allows importing 2,500 units without going through local homologation process. The Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is expected to be launched in our market by mid-2021 and could cost around Rs 60 lakh.

It is based on the TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture), which also underpins the C-HR crossover and the Prius. It measures 4,600mm in length, 1,855mm in width and 1,685mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,690mm. The Toyota RAV4 in India will be equipped with a hybrid powertrain. It is likely to receive the 218bhp version of the 2.5-litre Atkinson-cycle petrol engine with a strong hybrid system. There is a motor/generator mounted on the rear axle, which allows the hybrid powertrain to drive power to all-4 wheels. It offers up to 80% of the torque to the rear wheels.
