10 Upcoming SUVs with Powerful Turbocharged Petrol Engines

The rising demand for petrol cars has forced traditional diesel engine manufacturers to alter their plans. Now, auto manufacturers are working on petrol engines to power their cars including SUVs and MPVs. Carmakers are opting for turbocharged petrol engines, which are smaller in size and offers high power and fuel efficiency than the naturally aspirated petrol engines. In this article we bring you a list of upcoming SUVs with turbocharged petrol engines –

1. Kia Sonet

Upcoming Cars Under 10 Lakhs

Korean automaker, Kia will launch the Sonet sub-4 meter SUV in August 2020. Set to be Kia’s smallest SUV, the Sonet will be based on the same platform as the Hyundai Venue. It will be powered by a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine producing 118bhp of power and 172Nm of torque. Transmission choices will include a six-speed manual and a 7-speed DCT. The other engine options will include a 1.2L naturally aspirated petrol and a 1.5L turbo-diesel.

2. Mahindra XUV300 Sportz

At the 2020 Auto Expo, Mahindra has showcased the performance oriented XUV300 Sportz model. This SUV will also mark the debut of brand’s new 1.2-litre mStallion turbocharged petrol engine producing 130bhp of power and 230Nm of torque. This variant will be 20bhp more powerful and 30Nm torqueier than the existing BS6-compliant XUV300.

3. New Mahindra Thar

Mahindra will launch the new-generation Thar off-roader in mid-2020, most probably in June. The new model will receive the new 2.0L turbo-diesel engine. Adding to it, the SUV will also get the new 1.5-litre T-GDI turbocharged petrol engine.  This engine is capable of producing 163bhp of power and 280Nm of torque.

4. Tata Harrier Petrol

The Harrier SUV will soon receive a petrol derivative in the Indian market. It is reported that the SUV will be powered by a newly developed 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine, which is likely to produce around 150bhp of power. This engine is basically the 4-cylinder and higher capacity version of the 1.2-litre turbocharged engine that powers the Tata Nexon.

5. Renault Duster Turbo

Renault had showcased the Duster Turbo model at the 2020 Auto Expo. The new model is equipped with a new 1.3-litre turbocharged petrol engine that produces 156bhp of power and 250Nm of torque. Developed by Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance and Diamler, the new fuel injected gasoline motor will come as a replacement to the existing 1.5L naturally-aspirated petrol engine.

6. Nissan Kicks Turbo

Japanese automaker, Nissan will also introduce the facelift version of the Kicks SUV. Similar to the Duster Turbo, the Nissan Kicks will also receive the new 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine. This engine produces 156bhp of power and 250Nm of torque.

7. Nissan Magnite

Nissan will enter into the sub-4 meter SUV space with an all-new SUV, codenamed EM2. Rumoured to be called the Nissan Magnite, the small SUV will be based on the CMF-A+ platform. It will be powered by a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine producing 99bhp of power and 160Nm of torque. Transmission options will include a 6-speed manual and a CVT automatic.

8. Renault Kiger HBC

Similar to the Nissan Magnite, Renault is also developing a sub-4 meter SUV, codenamed HBC, based on the CMF-A+ platform. It will also receive the same 99bhp, 1.0L turbocharged petrol engine. Both manual and automatic gearbox options will be on offer.

9. Skoda Vision IN

Czech automaker will launch an all-new mid-sized SUV based on the Skoda Vision IN concept in early 2021. The new SUV will be offered with 2 turbocharged petrol engines – a 1.0L 3-cylinder turbo and a 1.5L 4-cylinder turbo. While the former is good for 115bhp and 200Nm, the 1.5L unit produces 148bhp and 250Nm of torque. Transmission choices will include a 6-speed MT as standard, a 6-speed torque convertor with 1.0L and a 7-speed DSG with 1.5L.

10. Volkswagen Taigun

Upcoming Volkswagen Cars

The German automaker, Volkswagen will also launch the Taigun mid-sized SUV in India in 2021. It will be based on the same MQB AO IN platform that underpins the Vision IN. The new Taigun will share the engine options with the Vision IN SUV, which means it will be offered with 1.0L turbo petrol and 1.5L turbo petrol engines.
