Hyundai India introduced the second-generation of the popular i20 premium hatchback – the Elite i20 –on September 22, 2014. Similar to its first-generation, the Hyundai Elite i20 has proved a success runway for the company that has achieved a milestone by crossing the sales of 100,000 units in June, 2015. With mature styling, additional features and improved dynamics, the Elite i20 justifies its price over the old model. The premium hatchback is available in four trim levels – Era, Magna, Sportz, Asta – and two engine options – 1.2-litre Kappa Dual VTVT petrol and 1.4-litre CRDi diesel.
Aiming to lower the waiting period of the Elite i20, Hyundai India has increased the production of the hatchback in March, 2015. The production of the premium hatchback takes place at the company’s Chennai-based manufacturing facility. It takes on the newly-launched Honda Jazz, Maruti Suzuki Swift, Volkswagen Polo, Nissan Micra and others in the segment.

2016 Hyundai Elite i20 Exterior
Built on Hyundai’s ‘Fluidic Sculpture 2.0’ design philosophy, the Elite i20 draws its design inspiration from the super-luxury Hyundai Genesis coupe. It looks sportier and more premium than the previous model. On the front end, the car features Hyundai’s signature hexagonal grille, prominent bonnet, a slim horizontal strip running towards the sweptback headlamps and wide trapezoidal fog lamps. The side profile gets premium dual-tone 16-inch diamond cut alloy wheels, door handles with chrome finish and dark treatment on the C-pillar. The rear profile, too, looks refreshing with new wrap-around windows and ‘boomerang’ shaped tail-lights.
Other design features include body-colored bumpers and outside door mirrors, black waistline moulding, roof antenna, turn indicators outside mirrors, dual-tone rear bumper, etc. The Elite i20 is 10mm shorter and 24mm wider than the old model. The wheelbase, too, has been increased by 45mm. It measures 3,985mm in length, 1,734mm in width, 1,505mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,570mm. With ground clearance of 170mm, the hatchback runs smoothly on the rough Indian roads. The Hyundai Elite i20 is available in seven exciting color options – Red Passion, Midas Gold, Pristin Blue, Mystic Blue, Stardust, Polar White and Sleek Silver.
2016 Hyundai Elite i20 Interior
The interior of the Elite i20 is more spacious and feature-rich than the old model. It has been revised with a new touchscreen infotainment system, a 3-spoke multi-function steering wheel (instead the old 4-spoke steering), a dual-tone dashboard, touch-screen music system, climate control, integrated 2-DIN audio player with Aux-in and USB connectivity and 1GB internal memory, push start-stop button, rear AC vents and driver seat height adjuster. Features like FATC (fully automatic temperature control) system and console armrest with storage box, sunglass holder, mounted card holder, and front and rear map pockets add more to its comfort and practicality levels. The hatchback offers a boot space of 285-liter, which is 10-litre smaller than the old i20.
With a longer wheelbase, the Elite i20 offers more generous cabin space, and interior comfort. As far as safety features are concerned, the hatchback comes equipped with four airbags, anti-lock braking system (ABS) with electronic brake-force distribution (EBD), parking assist (reverse parking sensors and rear camera), central locking system, impact sensing auto door unlock, rear view camera display, headlamp escort function, key less entry, rear defogger with timer, seat-belt pre-tensioners (driver and passenger) and immobilizer. Though, one must note that the aforementioned features vary model-wise.
2016 Hyundai Elite i20 Engine and Transmission
The Hyundai Elite i20 is available in two engine options – a 1.2-litre Kappa VTVT petrol and 1.4-litre U2 CRDi diesel – that produce a maximum power of 81.83bhp with 114.7Nm of torque, and 88.73bhp with 219.7Nm respectively. The petrol mill with a 5-speed manual transmission returns a fuel economy of 17.19kmpl. It takes 13.2 seconds to achieve 0-100kmph, and has an electronic speed limit of 179kmph. On the other hand, the diesel mill comes mated with a 6-speed manual gearbox that helps it to deliver an impressive mileage of 22.54kmpl. This engine is capable to achieve 0-100 in 13.2 seconds with a top speed of 180kmph.
