Few of the cars in its league including Maruti Vitara Brezza commands a waiting period of over 4-5 months. People looking for mid-sized sedans and hatchbacks are now ready to shed some extra to drive home an SUV. In order to capitalize on the growing popularity of sub-4 metre Small SUVs, car makers are readying their small compact SUVs for the Indian market. Here is the list of upcoming sub-compact SUVs in India in the next 2 years -
New Ford EcoSport - Ford, the American automaker will launch the updated Ford EcoSport in the country in 2017. The compact SUV will get cosmetic upgrades to both exterior and interior. It will be equipped with SYNC 3 infotainment system with Apple CarPlay & Android Auto. The compact SUV will come in 3 engine options - 1.5L Ti-VCT petrol, 1.0L EcoBoost & 1.5L TDCi diesel. It is expected to be priced in the range of Rs 7 lakh to Rs 10 lakh.
Maruti Vitara Brezza Petrol - Seeing the growing demand for petrol cars, Maruti Suzuki is planning to launch the petrol avatar of the compact SUV in India. Likely to be launched in early 2017, the vehicle will be powered by a 1.0-litre Boosterjet unit that is good for 110bhp and 170Nm of torque. An AMT version will also be launched. The petrol version is expected to be priced around Rs 8 lakh.
Tata Nexon - Tata Motors, the homegrown passenger carmaker will launch the much-awaited new Tata Nexon compact SUV in India by mid-2017. First unveiled at the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo as concept, the production model made its debut at 2016 Auto Expo. Based on modified X1 platform, the Nexon will be offered with two engines - 1.5-litre turbodiesel & 1.2-litre Revotron petrol. Transmission options will include - 6-speed manual and an AMT. The SUV is expected to be priced in the range of Rs 6.5 lakh to Rs 9 lakh.
Honda WRV 1.5L Petrol - Buoyed by positive response for the WRV compact SUV, Honda is planning to add more powerful engine to this SUV. It is expected to get a 1.5-litre i-VTEC petrol engine that also powers the City sedan. This engine is capable of producing 118bhp of power and 145Nm of torque. POwer will be transmitted to the front wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox. It is likely to cost around Rs 8 lakh, and could go on sale by festive season, 2017.
Datsun Go Cross - Unveiled at the Auto Expo 2016 as concept, the new Datsun Go Cross Compact SUV will be launched in India in 2017-2018. Based on the GO hatch platform, the new compact SUV will be offered in two seating layouts - 5 & 7 seats. It will come with two engines - 1.2-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel. The SUV will be the most affordable in its league, and is likely to be priced around Rs 5.5 lakh to Rs 7 lakh.
Hyundai Carlino - Hyundai will launch its smallest SUV - the Carlino - in India in the first half of 2019. Unveiled as concept at Auto Expo 2016, the small SUV will rival against Maruti Vitara Brezza & Ford EcoSport. The production-spec model will be unveiled at the 2018 Delhi Auto Expo. To be offered with two engines - 1.0L turbocharged petrol & 1.4L diesel - the new Carlino compact SUV is expected to cost around Rs 7.5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh.
Renault Compact SUV - The French automaker is also working on a sub-4 metre SUV for the Indian market. The new SUV will be developed on the modified Renault Kwid platform, which is basically the shorter version of CMF architecture. This compact SUV is likely to be launched in 2018-19. It is expected to come in petrol version only, which could be a 1.0-litre SCe unit. This engine is capable of producing 67bhp of power and 91Nm of torque. Transmission options are likely to include a 5-speed manual and an AMT unit. The small SUV is expected to be priced between Rs 5.5 lakh to Rs 9 lakh.
Kia Compact SUV - Hyundai's low-cost brand, Kia has recently announced its entry into the Indian market. The company will start selling products from 2018, and the first model to be launched will be a compact SUV. The korean brand has recently revealed a new design sketch of its upcoming compact crossover - Kia Stonic. If reports are to be believed, the company could launch this car in India. It will come in both petrol and diesel fuel option.
