The much-awaited Skoda Karoq 2018 SUV has finally made its global debut at an event in Stockholm, Sweden. Set to replace the Yeti, the new SUV will go on sale in the European market towards the end of this year. The Karoq derives its name from Alaska, which combines two words - Kaa Raq (car) and Ruq (arrow). After Kodiaq, this is the second SUV from Skoda to pick up its name from the Alaskan region.
It is quite early to comment whether this SUV will come to India; however, media reports suggest that the vehicle could be launched in India in the second half of 2018. The company is likely to showcase this SUV at the Auto Expo 2018. To be positioned below the Kodiaq, the Karoq SUV shares its design elements from the later. It is based on the thoroughly modified MQB platform that also underpins the VW Tiguan and Skoda Kodiaq.
The new Skoda Koraq 2018 looks like a smaller version of the Kodiaq 7-seater SUV. Up to the C-pillar, the design of the SUV seems inspired from the Seat Ateca. Some of its design highlights include vertically slated chrome laden front grille, sweptback headlamps with projector units with integrated LED daytime running lamps and Kodiaq inspired large bumper.
The flared wheel arches of the SUV have been fitted to stylish looking 18-inch alloy wheels. It will also get square-like wheel arches and black cladding to the side profile. Other design highlights include blackened glass area, aggressive creases, ORVMs with integrated blinkers and roof rails. The SUV also has arrow-head shaped tail-lamps which sport a C-shaped pattern.
The cabin of the SUV has been designed to provide comfortable seating for all 5 occupants. It features leather upholstery for seats, steering wheel and gear knob, which gives it a more upmarket look. Featuring new design, improved quality interior and a host of in-car tech equipment, the new generation Skoda Koraq 2018 will be more appealing than the Yeti.
The Karoq SUV sits above 4 metre in length, measuring 4,382mm, 1,841mm, 1,605mm and 2,638mm in length, width, height and wheelbase respectively. It has a ground clearance of 200mm. It features VarioFlex rear seats, which can be removed to offer maximum boot space of 1,810-litres. With all seats in position, the SUV offers a luggage space of 521-litres.
The new Skoda Karoq 2018 will be offered with a range of TSI and TDI powertrain options, ranging from 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol to 2.0-litre TDI diesel. Both front wheel and rear-wheel drivetrain options will be on offer. A six-speed manual gearbox will come as standard, while a 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox will come as an optional.
The India-spec version is likely to come with the same 2.0-litre TDI diesel engine in both 4x2 and 4x4 options. This engine churns out a maximum power output of 148bhp and a peak torque of 340Nm. We expect this SUV to be priced in the range of Rs 15 lakh to Rs 20 lakh.
