Exterior Styling

The new-gen Pajero Sport is based on the ladder-frame platform that also underpins the L200/ Triton pickup. The car gets an Outlander-inspired ‘Dynamic Shield’ front design with elements like signature headlamps, secondary air dam, the GR-HEV-inspired X-shaped grille, well-designed bonnet and L-shaped LED daytime running lights. The side profile features pronounced wheel arches with 18-inch alloy wheels and long side belt creases. At the rear, the vehicle gets vertically-stacked taillight cluster with LED elements, a large windshield, rear windows with slightly edgy design and a chrome strip on the top of license plate enclosure. The new model looks more contemporary and sportier than the existing one.

The 2016 Pajero Sport is claimed to be more robust and safer than before, thanks to its advanced RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution Body) construction system. This technology maintains high cabin integrity and efficient energy absorption of the vehicle, and enhances its passive safety performance. The length of the SUV has been increased by 90mm, while width and wheelbase remain unchanged. Now, the SUV measures 4,785mm in length, 1,815mm in width and 1,805mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,800mm. The ground clearance, too, has been increased to 218mm from 205mm.

Interior & Features

Inside the cabin, the SUV gets a new Triton-inspired dashboard design with silver accents. The new model also hosts a wide array of comfort and connectivity features such as a touchscreen multimedia infotainment system, instrument binnacle on centre console, new four-spoke multifunction leather wrapped steering wheel, black leather upholstery (only on the top-trim), dual-zone automatic climate control, powered driver seat etc.

As far as safety features are concerned, the SUV comes equipped with seven airbags, anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic brake-force distribution (EBD), blind Sport warning, multi-around mirror technology with four-cameras, forward collision mitigation system and all wheel disc brakes.

Engine & Transmission

Ditching the existing 2.5-litre DI-D unit, the new Pajero Sport is powered by an all-new 2.4-litre diesel engine that is equipped with MIVEC (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing Electronic Control system) VVVT technology. It’s the same engine does duty to the new Triton (L200) pickup. It churns out a maximum power of 178.5bhp and 430Nm of torque.

Transmitting power to the wheels is a 6-speed manual and an 8-speed automatic transmission. Mitsubishi claims that the SUV’s new model will be 17% more fuel efficient than the existing one. It will emit 200gm less CO2 per km. The 2WD (two-wheel drive), and optional Super Select 4WD drive system with a low-range gearbox and differential lock will also continue to be on offer.

Competition – Hyundai Santa Fe, new-gen Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavor, and the upcoming Chevrolet Trailblazer.
