November 7, 2016 – Due to uncertainty over ban on bigger diesel vehicles in Delhi-NCR, Toyota India had to delay the launch of the new-generation Fortuner. Now that the ban has been lifted, the company has launched the SUV in the country at a starting price of Rs 25.92 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). The SUV is available in both petrol and diesel fuel options, making it the first car in the league to offer petrol option to buyers. Though the new-generation model retains the rugged appeal, it looks much more modern now – thanks to the new design philosophy. The changes you will see on the front of the vehicle include a twin-slat grille, dual projector head-lights with LED inserts, LED daytime running lamps, newly designed bumper, fog lamps with chrome housing, etc. The vehicle’s rear profile too looks edgier with a new wraparound windscreen, tail-lamp clusters with LED elements, new bumper and few others. Though the current-generation Toyota Fortuner too is one of the safest cars in the country today, the new model takes it to another level. In the Latin New Car Assessment Program (NCAP), the 2016 Fortuner scored 5-star ratings. The agency also said that the Fortuner’s occupant safety levels are as good as that of the Hilux pick-up truck, and the former performed better in certain bio-mechanical aspects. The Fortuner scored 5-star ratings in Australasian NCAP too. While the new model retains features such as ABS, EBD, Brake Assist, Driver & Passenger side airabgs and Vehicle Stability Control, it additionally gets rear passenger and side airbags (total 7), downhill assist control, trailer sway control, emergency locking retractors, hill-start assist control, etc. The new Fortuner is based on a lighter yet stiffer platform – TNGA – that makes it even safer for its passengers.

The previous generation model was powered by a 2.5-litre and 3.0-litre diesel engines that produces 142bhp, 343Nm and 169bhp, 343Nm, respectively. The new 2016 Toyota Fortuner is available with two all-new powertrains. The diesel version is powered by a 2.8-litre GD diesel engine that churns out a maximum power output of 177bhp and a peak torque of 450Nm. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic. This time, the SUV also gets a petrol engine. It is powered by a 2.7-litre unit that produces 166bhp of power and 245Nm of torque. The petrol version is available with a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic gearbox.
