MG Motors, the UK-based car manufacturer, controlled by the Chinese SAIC, has finally launched the all-new Hector SUV in India. In terms of pricing, the new 5-seater premium SUV is positioned right between the Hyundai Creta and the Hyundai Tucson. It directly rivals the Jeep Compass and the Tata Harrier. Tata had launched the Harrier SUV in January earlier this year, and has been receiving excellent response from car buyers. The MG Hector was one of the most-anticipated models, thanks to its high-tech features and exciting design. Here is a specifications based comparison between the MG Hector and Tata Hector.

MG Hector Vs Tata Harrier Price

The Tata Harrier is only available in single diesel and single manual transmission option. It is available in 4 variants – XE, XM, XT and XZ – priced at Rs 13 lakh, Rs 14.05 lakh, Rs 15.26 lakh and Rs 16.56 lakh, respectively.

On the other hand, the MG Hector is available in 4 trim levels and in total of 11 variants. It is available in petrol and diesel guise. The petrol range starts at Rs 12.18 lakh and goes up to Rs 16.78 lakh. On the other hand, the diesel Hector is priced at Rs 13.18 lakh for base model and Rs 16.88 lakh for the top-end model. In terms of pricing, the Tata Harrier diesel is slightly cheaper than the diesel version of the MG Hector.

MG’s first model for our market, the Hector is the longest car in its category. In terms of size, the SUV is 4,655mm in length making it longer than the Tata Harrier. It measures 1,835mm in width and 1,760mm in height, and offers a ground clearance of 192mm. It also has the longest wheelbase of 2,750mm, which results into more space inside the cabin. It comes with a luggage carrying capacity of 587-litres.

The Harrier is the widest SUV in its category, measuring 1,894mm. It measures 4,598mm in length and 1,706mm in height. The Harrier has a wheelbase of 2,741mm, which is 9mm shorter than the Hector. It comes with a ground clearance of 205mm, while the boot space stands at 425-litres.

MG Hector Vs Tata Harrier Specifications

The Tata Harrier is available in a single diesel engine option, which is paired to a single manual transmission option. It is powered by a 2.0-litre KRYOTEC engine, which is nothing but the Fiat’s MJD unit. This powertrain also powers the Jeep Compass and the MG Hector. While powering the Harrier, the 2.0L engine is capable of producing 138bhp of maximum power and 350Nm of torque. Power is transmitted to the front wheels via a 6-speed manual gearbox.

On the flip side, the MG Hector SUV is available in petrol and diesel guise. The oil burner is the same 2.0-litre unit that also powers the Harrier, but the Hector’s engine is more powerful than the Harrier. This powertrain produces 168bhp of power and 350Nm of torque. The petrol version gets a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine, which produces 141bhp of power and 250Nm of torque. The diesel engine is available with a single 6-speed manual gearbox, while the petrol version gets two transmission options – a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed DCT.

The hybrid version of the MG Hector comes equipped with a 1.5L petrol engine coupled to a 48 Volt mild-hybrid system. This hybrid version is around 12 per cent more fuel efficient than the regular petrol model. The 48V mild-hybrid system also provides additional 20Nm of torque at low-speeds to reduce turbo lag and improves driving experience in traffic situations. The Hector Hybrid also gets regenerative braking, which recharge the 48-volt battery using the vehicle’s kinetic energy. It also has an automatic engine stop-start system that will switch the engine off at idle speeds to save fuel.

MG Hector Vs Tata Harrier Mileage

The Tata Harrier is available in a single engine and single gearbox option. It is claimed to return an ARAI certified fuel efficiency of 17.41kmpl.

The MG Hector Hybrid version is claimed to return 15.81kmpl. The regular petrol manual and petrol DCT offers 14.16kmpl and 13.96kmpl respectively. The diesel model is claimed to return an ARAI fuel efficiency of 17.41kmpl.

The Tata Harrier is already a feature-loaded SUV, but the Hector comes with several segment-first features. It is equipped with a segment-first 10.4-inch portrait touchscreen infotainment system, segment-largest panoramic sunroof, 360 degree surround camera, heated ORVMs, all-LED lights, ambient lighting with 8 colour options, etc. Adding to it, the MG Hector is also called the Internet car. It gets an integrated eSIM that offers live location updates. Adding to it, the customers can turn on the AC, engine work and set-up features like geo-fencing using the smartphone application. The SUV also gets AI-based voice recognition, segment-first OTA (Over-The-Air) upgrades, etc.

The Tata Harrier SUV is also fairly loaded including 7-inch TFT MID coloured screen, automatic headlamps, LED daytime running lights, projector headlamps, ESP (Electronic Stability Program) with 14 functions, etc. The 14 function ESP enhances the off-road capability of this front-wheel-drive SUV. Adding to it, the Harrier also gets the mild-drive modes.
