January 13, 2017 – The much-awaited new Maruti Suzuki Ignis mini SUV has finally been launched in the Indian car market. Launched as a compact city SUV, the Ignis falls in-line with B-segment hatchbacks in terms of pricing. The small SUV is priced very competitively at Rs 4.59 lakh, targting B-segment hatchback buyers. The Ignis mini SUV share its engine lineup with the Swift/Baleno/Dzire. The petrol version is powered by a 1.2-litre K-Series engine that is capable of producing 81.8bhp of power at 6,000rpm and 113Nm of torque at 4,000rpm. The oil burner is a 1.3-litre MJD unit that is good for 73.8bhp of power and 190Nm of torque. Despite powered by the same petrol engine, the Ignis is less powerful than the Swift hatch. Transmission options include a 5-speed manual and an AMT unit.

Talking about Swift, the hatchback’s petrol engine – 1.2L K Series – churns out a maximum power output of 83bhp and a peak torque of 115Nm. The diesel engine is the same offered with the Ignis. Both models feature the same set of engine specifications. However, Ignis is based on Suzuki’s new generation platform that also underpins the Baleno. This engine is lighter and stiffer, which contributes to its performance and fuel efficiency. The hatchback petrol version is claimed to return 20.4kmpl while the diesel model delivers 25.2kmpl of mileage. Dimensionally, the Swift is slightly longer and wider than the Ignis mini SUV. The hatchback measures 3,850mm in length, 1,695mm in width and 1,530mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2430mm. Talking about Ignis, the mini SUV is 3,700mm long, 1,660mm wide and 1,595mm tall, and has a wheelbase of 2,438mm. The Swift is 150mm longer and 35mm wider than the Ignis, while the mini SUV is 65mm taller and has 8mm longer wheelbase than the hatch sibling.

The Ignis has a ground clearance of 180mm, which is more than sufficient to tackle Indian road conditions. On the other hand, the Swift comes with 170mm of ground clearance. The mini SUV has a boot space of 258-litres, which can be expandable by up to 415-litres. On the other hand, the hatchback gets 205-litres of luggage compartment.

The Ignis sub-compact SUV is lighter and robust, thanks to Suzuki’s new generation platform that also underpins the Maruti Suzuki Baleno. It comes equipped with a nicely designed chromed front fascia, flared wheel arches, jeweled headlamps, and clam-shell bonnet. Other design highlights include blacked out A and B pillars, 16-inch alloys, tailgate mounted spoiler and a rear windscreen wiper. Inside the cabin, the vehicle shares most of its components from the Baleno. It features dual-tone dashboard with integrated touchscreen display and sporty orange highlights. The range-topping model gets SmartPlay infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, bluetooth enabled audio system, automatic climate control, and keyless entry with engine starter button. For passenger safety and security, the SUV will get dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, automatic headlamps, etc.

Talking about Swift, the hatchback features honeycomb grille, sweptback headlamps, fog lamp with silver bezel on housing and large air dam. Other features include 15-inch alloys, body coloured door handles, power adjustable ORVMs with integrated blinkers, tall boy hatch stance, wrap-around taillamps and big rear bumper, etc. It comes with an all-black interior scheme. Feature list include power windows, adjustable headrest, 60:40 split rear seats, multi-functional steering wheel, 2-DIN audio system with Bluetooth, keyless entry with push button start, etc. For passenger safety and security, the hatchback gets rear parking sensors, ABS with EBD and dual SRS airbags.
