Mahindra KUV100 seems very promising on paper, though it will tough for it to crack the market of the Maruti Suzuki’s best-selling Wagon R hatchback.

Mahindra KUV100 is the newest budget segment compact SUV from the home-grown automaker that will target young buyers who aspire for stylish yet affordable utility vehicle. Scheduled to launch on 15th January 2016, this mini SUV is likely to be priced around Rs. 4 lakh – Rs. 6.5 lakh.

The company has already revealed the vehicle’s technical specifications, features and other details. On paper, the vehicle seems very promising. Though, it won’t be an easy run for the Mahindra’s new compact SUV against the Maruti Suzuki’s best-selling Wagon R hatchback.

Mahindra’s new mini SUV looks premium and sportier than its rival. With aggressive front styling, wide stances and high shoulder line, XUV500-inspired grille, wrap-around headlamps with LED DRLs and square wheel arches, the vehicle looks like a pseudo SUV with looks similar to a tall boy hatchback. It also gets a curvy roofline, electrical ORVMs, Chevrolet Beat-inspired door handles and 15-inch wheels with 185/65 R15 tyres. It will come with a ground clearance of 180mm – 120mm. This compact SVU will be offered in 7 exterior paint options – Pearl White, Fiery Orange, Designer Grey, Aquamarine, Dazzling Silver and Midnight Black.

The Maruti Wagon R, on the other hand, features a tall-boy design with straight stances. The vehicle gets a chrome accentuated front grille, blue tint headlamp and body-coloured bumper on the front end. The side profile sports flared fenders, body-colored outside door handles, tinted window glasses, 14-inch wheels with full wheel covers and ‘S’ badges, side body moulding and moon rock silver roof rails. Other styling elements include crystal effect tail lamps, chrome back door garnish, etc. The hatchback measures 3,599mm in length, 1,495mm in width and 1,700mm in height with a wheelbase of 2,400mm. It has a ground clearance of 165mm.

The all-new compact SUV from Mahindra hosts a bunch of comfort and connectivity features such as a touchscreen audio system, steering mounted audio controls, Scorpio-inspired instrument console and steering wheel, power windows, ABS, EBD and ESP. While the airbag protection is exclusively offered with the higher variants of the vehicle. Features like dual-tone interior theme with piano black finish dashboard, faux wood and silver finishing, silver accents on steering wheel, instrument cluster and centre console, and leather upholstery add more its sporty appeal. With 3+3 (6-seats) configuration, this mini SUV will offer a more generous cabin space and legroom than the Wagon R.

The Maruti Wagon R gets a dual tone beige and black interior with silver finishing here and there. All the variants of the vehicle come equipped with electronic power steering, power windows, AC unit with heater and rotary controls, keyless central door locking, i-CATS system and optional driver SRS airbag and anti-lock braking system (ABS). The seats are designed ergonomically, and offer enormous comfort and support. It can accommodate 5 adult passengers without any squeezing effect. There is ample legroom, shoulder room and headroom too. It has a boot capacity of 180-litres.

The Mahindra’s upcoming mini SUV comes with an all-new mFalcon engine lineup – a 1.2-litre G80 petrol and a 1.2-litre D75 diesel. The petrol mill churns out a maximum power of 82bhp at 5,500rpm against 114Nm of torque at 3,500rpm, while the diesel mill offers 77bhp at 3,750rpm and 190Nm at 1,750rpm – 2,250rpm. Both the powertrains come mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox, combined with the 2WD drivetrain system. With Mahindra’s all-new mFalcon engine lineup, it is claimed to be highly fuel efficient.

On the other hand, the Maruti Wagon R is powered by a 1.0-litre K10B petrol engine and a 998cc, 3-cylinder CNG motor that are paired to a 5-speed manual transmission. While the former delivers 67.04bhp of power at 6,200rpm and 90Nm of torque at 3,500rpm, the latter is good for 58.1bhp and 77Nm.
