Kia Sonet Vs Hyundai Venue – Which One Makes A Better Deal?

Kia Motors has finally marked its entry in the highly-competitive subcompact SUV segment with the all-new Sonet. Priced between Rs 6.71 lakh – Rs 11.99 lakh, the Kia Sonet takes head-to-head against multiple cars including Hyundai Venue, Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Tata Nexon, Ford EcoSport and Mahindra XUV300.

Interestingly, the new Kia compact SUV shares its platform and several components with one of its arch rivals – the Hyundai Venue. Both models, however, are quite different from each other. Let’s take a look at all similarities and differences of the Sonet and Venue.

Similar to the Seltos, the new Kia compact SUV comes in two formats – Tech Line and GT Line. The model lineup includes 4 turbo-petrol, 4 petrol (NA), 7 diesel and 3 GTX variants. The petrol models are available in the price range of Rs 6.71 lakh – Rs 11.99 lakh and the diesel variants cost between Rs 8.05 lakh – Rs 11.99 lakh. All are ex-showroom.  

At present, the Hyundai Venue comes in the price range of Rs 6.75 lakh for the base E petrol version – Rs 11.63 lakh for the SX+ Sport DCT petrol model (all, ex-showroom). The carmaker recently added four new iMT-equipped variants to the Venue model lineup.

Besides platform, the Kia Sonet shares its engines and gearboxes with the Hyundai Venue. The new Kia compact SUV has been offered with a 1.2L naturally-aspirated petrol (82bhp/115Nm), a 1.0L turbo petrol (119bhp/172Nm) and a 1.5L diesel unit (99bhp/240Nm). While the 1.2L NA gasoline unit is available with a 5-speed manual gearbox, the turbo-petrol motor is exclusively offered with an iMT and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. While the Venue diesel is available with a 6-speed manual gearbox only, the Sonet diesel comes with both manual and automatic gearbox options.

Despite sharing the engines, Kia’s new compact SUV is slightly more frugal than its cousin sibling. The Sonet’s 1.2L petrol engine returns a claimed mileage of 18.4kmpl. The turbo petrol motor delivers 18.2kmpl with iMT gearbox and 18.3kmpl with DCT unit. The diesel unit promises 19kmpl with automatic transmission and 24.1kmpl with manual.

The Hyundai Venue’s 1.2L NA petrol and 1.0L turbo petrol motors deliver fuel economy of 17.52kmpl and 18.15kmpl (DCT) respectively. The SUV’s diesel model is claimed to return fuel efficiency of 23.3kmpl.

The new subcompact SUV from Kia is packed with several segment first features. The model offers the segment’s largest 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system sourced from the Seltos. The unit is compatible to both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The brand’s UVO Connected suite with over 55 features will also be on offer. Some of its premium features include Bose 7-speaker audio system with sub-woofer, LED sound mood lamps, Over-The-Air (OTA) map updates, Smart key, remote engine start via UVO, wireless charger with cooling function, front driver and passenger ventilated seats and air purifier with virus protection. The small SUV has a 4.2-inch instrument cluster panel showing important information.

Compared to the Sonet, the Hyundai Venue has slightly less goodies to offer. It comes equipped with an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with BlueLink connectivity suite, a semi-digital instrument panel, electric sunroof, Arkamys sound system, driver rear view mirror, wireless phone charger, air purifier, rear AC vents, automatic climate control and rear parking sensors.

Both models have sporty appearance and views on their design could be polarizing. Upfront, the Sonet features the signature ‘Tiger Nose’ grille with mesh in three-dimensional geometry along with crown jewel LED headlamps, LED DRLs with integrated side turn indicators, ‘Turbo’ shaped front skid plates, and sculpted bonnet. Other interesting elements include floating silver roof rails, prominent wheel arches with alloy wheels, LED taillamps connected via a reflector garnish, diffuser fin rear skid plate and sporty dual muffler design. The compact SUV’s GT Line trim has some exclusively design bits such as black high glossy grille with GT Line logo, red accents on the front and piano black diffuser fin skid plates with red accent. Hyundai’s subcompact SUV features a large grille with chrome-lined mesh and a signature logo giving it an aggressive appeal. The model also carries split headlamps with projector elements and LED DRLs. The pronounced wheel arches with 16-inch tyres, bold shoulder creases and square LED taillamps add more to its sporty looks. While dimensions of the Sonet are still under the wraps, the Venue measures 3995mm in length, 1770mm in width and 1590mm in height.
