Jeep is betting big on Compass which is aimed squarely at the C segment. The company is planning to begin production from June with some right-hand wheel drive markets on its radar for export in future. Set to be assembled at Fiat’s Ranjangaon plant, Compass will be priced aggressively. The C segment model is estimated to fall in the price vicinity of Rs 20 lakh to Rs 25 lakh. In fact, some media reports suggest that Jeep could tag the base variant as low as Rs 16 lakh. At this pricing, Compass will undercut close competitor Tucson by around Rs 3 lakh that is priced in the range of Rs 19 lakh to Rs 25 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The American SUV maker is currently tight-lipped about the pricing therefore we expect more concrete details in the coming days.
Jeep Compass carline will be offered with two engine choices in petrol and diesel guise mated to the standard manual and optional automatic unit. The petrol variants will source power from 1.4-litre, turbocharged MultiAir unit tuned to put out 138bhp and 200Nm of torque. The 2.0-litre Multijet II oil burner will be high on power at 168bhp and 350Nm of torque. Transmission choices will include six-speed manual gearbox and optional 7-speed AT unit exclusive to select petrol trims. Additionally, the carline will get standard 2WD and optional 4WD variants.
Hyundai Tucson also comes with petrol and diesel engines in manual and automatic variants. The 2.0-litre Dual VTVT petrol unit good for 155bhp makes 192Nm of torque. Diesel variants in the line-up draw power from the 2.0-litre CRDi powertrain good for 185bhp and 400Nm. Both the engines are available with 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic options supported by the standard 2WD drivetrain. The 4WD drivetrain is currently missing from the line-up, though Hyundai will add 4WD system to the carline sometime this year.
Dimensionally, the Jeep Compass will measure 4,398mm in length, 1,819mm in width and 1,667mm in height. Wheelbase at 2,636mm implicates spacious cabin, while the ground clearance will be around 178mm.
Hyundai Tucson is relatively larger boasting 4,475mm length, 1,850mm width and 1,660mm height (including roof rails). The SUV has a longer wheelbase of 2,670mm that allows more space inside. Boot space for storing luggage is again generous at 513-litres.
In terms of features, Jeep claims to have stuffed Compass with some ground breaking features that will debut in Indian market with the SUV. Furthermore, Compass will pack 50 active and passive safety & security features including six airbags on 4×4 variant, stability electronic control, all disc brakes, cornering fog lamps, ABS, EBD, PBA, HBFC, EBP, hill start assist as standard across line-up. Additionally, interior will equip 8.4-inch UConnect touchscreen system with two different sized screens, Beats 9-speaker audio system with subwoofer, automatic climate control and perforated leather seats to name a few.
Hyundai Tucson on the other hand gets 8.0-inch touchscreen system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, navigation system, voice recognition, Bluetooth, USB and AUX, cruise control, leather upholstery, dual-zone climatecontrl, 10-way power adjustable driver seat, rear AC vents etc. On the safety front, it packs dual barrel LED headlamps, powered tailgate with height adjustment, electric parking brake, hill start assist control, vehicle stability management, downhill brake control, brake assist, front parking sensors, dual airbags and ABS with EBD among several others.
