Hyundai finally entered into the sub-4 meter SUV with the Venue compact SUV. The Hyundai Venue directly rivals the likes of Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Tata Nexon, Ford EcoSport and the newly launched Mahindra XUV300. The new XUV300 carline is available in 4 trim levels – W4, W6, W8 and W8 (O). The petrol version of the SUV is priced in the range of Rs 7.90  lakh – 10.25 lakh, while the diesel version is priced at Rs 8.49 lakh for the base model and Rs 10.80 lakh for the top-spec model. On the flip side, the Hyundai Venue petrol version is priced between Rs 6.50 lakh and Rs 11.10 lakh and the diesel model is tagged at Rs 7.75 lakh for the entry-level model and Rs 10.84 lakh for the high-end variant. All the prices are ex-showroom.

Both these SUVs sit under 4 meter in length, but the Venue is 5mm longer than the XUV300. However, the Mahindra XUV300 has the longest wheelbase in its category rated at 2,620mm. Adding to it, the XUV300 is 50mm wider and 30mm taller than the Venue. The XUV300 measures 3,990mm in length, 1,890mm in width and 1,620mm in height, while the Venue is 3,995mm long, 1,770mm wide and 1,590mm tall. The Mahindra XUV300 comes with a ground clearance of 180mm. While the Venue offers a boot space of 350L, the XUV300 has a luggage carrying capacity of 257L.

The XUV300 sub-4 meter SUV is being offered in 2 engine options – a 1.2-litre G80 turbocharged petrol and a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder, turbocharged diesel. The oil burner is capable of producing 115bhp of power at 3,750rpm and a peak torque of 300Nm between 1,500rpm – 2,500rpm. On the other hand, the 4-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine is capable of producing a maximum power output of 110bhp at 5,000rpm and a peak torque of 200Nm between 2,000rpm – 3,500rpm. The Hyundai Venue is available with 3 engine options – a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol with 6-speed MT & a 7-speed DCT, a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol with 5-speed MT and a 1.4-litre U2 CRDi diesel with a 6-speed MT. While the turbocharged petrol engine produces 118bhp and 172Nm, the 1.2L unit offers 83bhp and 115Nm. The diesel engine belts out 89bhp of power and 220Nm of torque. In terms of power, the diesel version of the XUV300 has an advantage over the Venue. However the turbocharged Venue is around 8bhp more powerful than the XUV300.

Hyundai’s are not known for high fuel efficiency, though the new Venue is claimed to return a good mileage. The Hyundai Venue 1.2L and 1.0L petrol versions are claimed to return an ARAI certified fuel economy of 17.5kmpl and 18.15kmpl respectively, while the diesel model delivers 23.7kmpl.
