After completing a decade in the Indian market, German conglomerate Volkswagen plans on bringing affordably priced premium products in a bid to expand its market share in the domestic market. To achieve this, VW eyes aggressive localisation for its future models. Moving forward, the company lately proclaimed its plans to launch Tiguan SUV and Passat premium sedan which was taken off production owing to sluggish demand. Determined to strengthen its hold on the Indian market, Volkswagen has lined-up new models that are expected to be more feature rich and affordable. Here is a look at the upcoming Volkswagen cars in India that are slated to launch in the next two years.
Volkswagen is prepping to bring back the Passat nameplate to India sometime this year. The premium sedan will come in its new avatar which is already available in some international markets. Underpinning VW’s globally acclaimed MQB platform, the Passat will first be launched in diesel version, whereas the petrol and hybrid variants will be rolled-out later. Making a return to the Indian market, the new generation Passat is a complete departure from the defunct model. That said the new Passat will get a host of new elements to the exterior and interior, reinforcing the aggressive stance. With a bolder front profile, the new Passat will equip a four-bar grille, LED head lights, fog lamps and new bumper. In addition, the premium sedan will sport new LED tail lamps, pronounced wheel arches, larger alloy wheels etc. The inside of the sedan will be premium and feature-packed. To make it desirable, VW will not only make styling changed, but the cabin will arm a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster reminiscent of Audi TT, leather wrapped flat bottom steering wheel, new infotainment system and ambient blue lighting among others. To be launched in diesel version first, the new Passat will plonk a 2.0-litre TDI unit with 187bhp of top power and 400Nm of torque. This engine will be paired to a 6-speed DSG automatic transmission. Besides, there will be a 1.8-litre TFSI petrol engine with a 6-speed manual and 7-speed DSG auto unit.
