Datsun redi GO Review front view

We Indians have a penchant for small cars and our obsession for it is not coming to an end anytime soon. Much before Tata envisaged developing a ‘laktakiya’ car and inspiring Renault to follow suit with Kwid, India got its first official ‘small car’ the iconic 800 model. Sadly, all good things have to come to an end and so did the 800 car, but its lineage lives on with the Alto 800, a much modern rendition of the original model.

With Kwid breaking the norms with unconventional styling, carmakers are attempting to match the bar raised by this French make. As we enter into a new financial year, we bring you a list of upcoming small cars in India expected to be priced in the vicinity of Rs 3 lakh to Rs 5 lakh. So if you are planning to upgrade from a two-wheeler to a four-wheeler, or pondering to switch your old car with a new one, this list gives you an insight into the new upcoming small cars slated for launch in the coming months.

1. Datsun redi-Go 1.0-Litre

Following the footsteps of its French ally, Nissan’s low cost brand Datsun launched redi-Go in India last year. The redi-GO shares its underpinnings with the Kwid, albeit there is a stark difference in the appearance, bearing no resemblance to its French cousin. At the time of launch Datsun had rolled-out, only the 800cc version with a five-speed manual unit. The company however hinted at adding 1.0-litre engine and an automated manual transmission on the hatchback. It is expected that the new engine and the 5-speed Easy R-AMT unit will be borrowed from the Kwid. The 1.0-litre unit on the Kwid makes maximum power of 67bhp and peak torque of 91Nm.

Expected Price-Rs 3.50 lakh (1.0L) and Rs 3.80 lakh to Rs 4 lakh (AMT)

Expected Launch-June 2017
