Mileage is the second most important component after pricing that influences decision in car buying. In a bid to make cars more frugal, carmakers equip their vehicles with advanced technology like the SHVS system used by Maruti India in some its cars. While diesel driven cars outnumber petrol vehicles in terms of fuel economy, auto giants have been working relentlessly to make the latter more frugal.
With price differential between petrol and diesel shrinking constantly, cars with petrol engine are making a comeback. This brings petrol cars on par with the diesel engined vehicles as far as fuel running cost is concerned. Taking into account the significance of mileage in volume segment, we have listed the best mileage cars in India claimed to return over 25kmpl.
Launched in 2014, Ciaz was Maruti’s break-through in the mid-size sedan segment. Sporting contemporary design, new styling elements, advanced in-cabin tech and frugal engines, Ciaz emerged a tough competitor for credible players in the segment including Honda City and Hyundai Verna. To give it a cusp over rivals, Maruti equipped Ciaz with the SHVS (Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki) mild hybrid technology and a bunch of smart hybrid features including the ISG (integrated starter generator), Idle Start/Stop etc.
Powered by the 1.3-litre Multi-jet oil burner, the SHVS technology is available on the diesel version only. Good for 88.5bhp and 200Nm, the fuel economy for the Ciaz SHVS is rated at 28.09kmpl. This not just makes Ciaz the most fuel efficient car in India but it also makes it eligible for government’s National Electric Mobility Mission Plan (NEMMP). That said the Ciaz range is priced between Rs7.73 lakh to Rs 9.56 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). Just so you know, a mid-life facelift of Ciaz is underway.
