Volkswagen Taigun compact SUV not coming to India

Volkswagen Taigun

We reported earlier that Volkswagen is contemplating a compact SUV and a compact sedan for the Indian market. It was speculated that Volkswagen will launch the Taigun SUV in the country by 2015-16; however, Michael Mayer (Director of Volkswagen Passenger Cars India) denied all the reports.

Unveiled at the 2014 Delhi Motor Show as pre-production concept, the Taigun compact SUV will be pitched against the Ford EcoSport. The production spec model will be unveiled at the Sao Paulo Motor Show this year. Speaking to ET auto, Mr. Michael Mayer said, “We see the SUV segment growing. We are looking to bring in a car in this segment, but we’ve not decided yet on the product. Obviously Taigun has been around for a while in other countries. So you won’t see the Taigun but we are looking seriously into compact SUVs.”

Volkswagen is also planning to launch a mid-sized SUV in the form of new generation Tiguan SUV or T-ROC based SUV. However, the company is also aiming at exporting these products from India. Adding to it, the company also stated that they will never compromise on the quality for the sake of volumes. So, all upcoming products will carry premium badge. Based on the Volkswagen Up! Platform, the Taigun is 3,858mm long, 1,727mm wide and 1,570mm high, and it has a good wheelbase of 2,469mm.
