Tata Zest variants, features & specifications- explained

Tata Zest compact sedan

Tata Motors has just launched the much-awaited Zest compact sedan in the Indian car market. Launched in petrol and diesel guises, price for the entry level petrol variant starts at Rs. 4.64 lakh while the base diesel variant costs Rs. 5.64 lakh. Both the aforementioned prices are Ex. Showroom, Delhi. With this aggressive pricing, the homegrown automaker aims to revive its lost market share in the growing Indian market. The vehicle will compete against the likes of Honda Amaze, Maruti Dzire and Hyundai Xcent.

Tata Motors is offering the Zest compact sedan in nine variants- four with petrol and rest five with diesel. The petrol variants are XE, XM, XMS and XT while the diesel variants include XE, XM, XMA, XMS and the XT. The petrol version of the sedan is propelled by a 1.2T Revotron motor which is a turbocharged motor, producing 89bhp and 140Nm of torque. The oil burner is the tried and trusted Fiat’s 1.3-litre MJD Quadrajet engine that develops two states of tune- 74bhp and 89bhp. The lower spec 74bhp diesel motor is only offered with the base XE trim. The top-of-the line diesel engine is paired to an automated manual transmission (AMT) gearbox and rest variants features five-speed manual gearbox. The petrol engine in every variant is coupled with a five-speed manual transmission which sends the power to front wheels of the sedan.

The Tata Zest base trim- XE is equipped with air conditioner with heater option, power steering with tilt adjustable function, front power windows, central locking and engine immobilizer. However, this variant lacks entertainment and connectivity features and important safety and security features including ABS, EBD and airbags. However, it features alloys wheels as a standard feature.

The mid-level XM trim has all the features that are accessible in the entry level variant – XE. Adding to it, the vehicle gets power adjustable outside rear view mirrors, remote central locking, projector headlamps, fog lamps, and lots of chrome. For passenger entertainment and connectivity, this model has Harman Kardon infotainment system with 4 speakers, 4 tweeters and a remote control, Bluetooth, USB, AUX-in and iPod connectivity. Moreover, the tilt adjustable steering gets audio and telephony controls mounted evenly on both sides of it. Unlike the base trim, this variant gets Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) as added safety features, albeit airbags are missing.

The XMA trim is basically an upgraded version of the standard XM trim. This model has all the features that are available in XM trim; however, it is only available with diesel guise. It is propelled by a 1.3L MJD engine which is paired to an AMT gearbox.

The XMS trim is loaded with all the features that are on offer with the mid-level XM variant. The company has added good amount of safety and security features to it in order to distinguish it from the XM model. It boasts anti-lock braking system (ABS) and airbags for driver and front co-passenger to ensure extra safety.

The top-of-the line Zest XT trim gets an array of added features. Its infotainment system gets technical up-gradation as it has an SD card reader and touchscreen system for the automatic climate control. This infotainment system also offers USB and SD cards, and voice recognition. Other features include rear parking sensors, LED daytime running lamps, etc.

Interestingly, all Tata Zest variants gets 15-inch alloy wheels, body colored bumpers, door handles and outside rear view mirrors, LED tail lamps, etc as standard features.
