Tata Kite hatchback spied

We reported earlier that Tata Motors is working on an all-new compact car, which will go on sale in the country in 2015. This new hatchback is likely to be manufactured at the company’s Gujarat facility, which is currently used to produce Nano.

Codenamed Kite, the compact car will be positioned between the Nano and soon to be launched Bolt hatchback. It will be based on the modified Indica platform, and will rival against the likes of Maruti Celerio, Hyundai i10 and Maruti Wagon R.

If media reports are to be believed, the new hatchback will take styling cues with the Tata Zest, the Bolt hatchback and the Tata Nexon compact SUV concept shown at the 2014 Delhi Motor Show. The new hatchback is expected to get much better styling than the Zest and Bolt hatch. There will be no sharing of design cues with the previous Tata models, which seems to be a positive move.

The Kite hatchback will also get new interiors, which will be shared with the newer-generation Tata cars. The vehicle would share seats and steering wheel to keep costs down. It is also expected to offer spacious cabin and large boot space.

Under the hood, the Tata Kite is likely to get Tata’s all-new 1.05-litre 3-cylinder common-rail diesel engine. Paired to a five-speed manual gearbox, this motor is expected to develop 64.01bhp of power. The petrol version will get an all-new 1.2-litre petrol engine. A CNG or LPG variants might also come, and there could be an AMT-equipped variant to rival Celerio AMT.

Expected Price: Rs. 3.5-5 lakh

Competition- Maruti Celerio, Wagon R and Hyundai i10
