Maruti XA Alpha compact SUV launch slated to 2016

Maruti XA Alpha

We reported earlier that Maruti Suzuki will launch the much-awaited XA Alpha based compact SUV in India within 12 months. If media reports are to be believed, the company is planning to launch two new SUVs in next 2 years. The first product to come will be the S-Cross SX4 while the second sub-compact SUV will be the XA Alpha. Unveiled at the 2014 Delhi Motor Show, the S-Cross SX4 will be launched in January 2015.

The XA Alpha concept was unveiled at the 2012 Indian Auto Expo and after 4 longs years, the production spec model will see daylight by early 2016. The sub-4 metre EcoSport rival is likely to come in two engine options- 1.2-litre K-Series petrol and 1.3-litre Fiat sourced Multi-Jet diesel engine. India’s largest car manufacturer doesn’t have much presence in the SUV segment and is now aiming to tap this growing market with S-Cross and XA Alpha.

The Maruti Suzuki S-Cross SX4 has already been spotted several times during its test rounds on Indian roads. This model will only get two diesel motors- a 1.3-litre multi-jet and 1.6-litre multi-jet. The crossover will share its interiors with the Ertiga MPV.

The Maruti XA Alpha based crossover will compete against the Ford EcoSport, which will later be joined by Honda Brio based SUV and Volkswagen Taigun. The company is also planning to launch three cars this year including Swift and Swift Dzire facelifts, and Ciaz sedan.
