Honda Brio based compact SUV- India launch, price, engine spec & details

Honda Brio based compact SUV details

We reported earlier that Honda Cars India is planning to introduce a compact SUV which will be based on the Brio platform. It was speculated that the company will launch the Jazz-based crossover, Vezel, which was unveiled at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show. However, Honda dropped the plan and is now aiming to launch a mini SUV based on the Brio low cost car platform.

The Brio platform has already used to develop three cars including Brio hatchback, Amaze compact sedan and Mobilio MPV. The compact SUV will be the fourth product to be developed on Brio low cost platform.

Honda Brio SUV Engine Specifications and Mileage

It is expected that Honda will share its engine configuration with the upcoming Mobilio MPV. The petrol version is likely to get the same 1.5-litre i-VTEC engine that churns out a maximum power output of 117bhp and 145Nm of top torque. The oil burner will be powered by the highly fuel efficient 1.5-litre i-DTEC engine that produces 98bhp of top power and 200Nm of torque. Both the engines will be coupled to a five-speed manual transmission gearbox, however, the petrol version might also get automatic gearbox.

While the petrol version is likely to offer a fuel efficiency of around 15-18kmpl, the diesel Brio SUV is expected to return a hefty mileage of around 20-24kmpl.

Dimension

If media reports to believe, the Brio SUV is likely to share the wheelbase of the Mobilio MPV which is around 250mm longer than the Amaze sedan (2650mm). With this wheelbase, it will be difficult for Honda to keep its size under 4 metre. However, reports are also there that this model will be under 4-metre.

Design

Like its engine, the Brio SUV will share its interior components with Amaze and Mobilio MPV. This will help the company to keep its cost down. It will offer a seat for five adults in 2+3 layout. Best in segment boot space is likely on offer with rear folding seats to further increase the capacity. Music system, power steering, ABS with EBD, airbags, fabric upholstery on lower spec and leather on top spec and other features will be sourced from its sedan and MPV sibling. On exteriors, the vehicle is likely to remain identical to its MPV sibling; however the company will increase its ground clearance and add some more sporty character to it like roof rails, rear spoiler, alloys, body cladding and others.

Honda Brio SUV expected Launch and Price

It is speculated that the compact crossover will make its Indian debut by the end of 2015. It is likely to be priced in the range of 6.5 lakh to 9 lakh.
