GM is planning to launch Chevrolet Beat compact sedan in India

2016 Chevrolet Beat model

Facing huge losses, General Motors is aiming to re-strategies its plans for the Indian car market. If media reports are to be believed, the company is now aiming to introduce a compact sedan based on the Chevrolet Beat’s M300 platform. The American automaker is also contemplating the next generation Beat in 2016-17.

Codenamed as MCM, the sub-4 metre sedan is likely to go on sale in 2017, which is expected to come before GM’s upcoming platform (Project Amber).  The compact sedan would compete against the likes of Maruti Swift Dzire, Tata Zest, Honda Amaze, Hyundai Xcent and the upcoming cars from Ford and Volkswagen.

With the launch of a sub-4 metre segment, GM India is expecting to further improve its market share from the current 2.2 per cent. The technical specifications of the car are yet to be revealed, but it is expected to share its engine lineup with the Beat. Expect a 1.2-litre petrol and 1.0-litre diesel engines to power the upcoming car; however, the company might also pick the 1.3-litre multi-jet unit that also powers the Chevrolet Enjoy MPV.

The company has already started development work for the next generation Beat, and the early prototype of the car has been spotted testing in Korea. It is expected that the next model will be larger in size compared to current model, which in return offers a spacious cabin.
