After Maruti Swift and Datsun Go failed Global NCAP crash tests, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) is looking quite proactive on making Indian cars safe. The ministry is planning to make it mandatory for passenger cars to go through frontal crash test and side impact crash test in India. And if any car fails to pass the test, it will not be allowed to go on sale.
In order to comply the regulations, cars will need to be equipped with airbags along with other safety features, and pass the crash test. If reports are to be believed all the cars will be crash tested at 56Km/h. The Global NCAP, however, tested all the made-in-India cars at 64Km/h.
For this, the government is also building testing facilities under the National Automotive Testing and Research & Development Infrastructure Project (NATRIP) initiative. The regulations will be enacted instantly, once the facilities get ready.
The Central Motor Vehicle Rules is the responsible body for the regulations implementations, which includes the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) as a member of its standing committee.
